VAGABOND
(Continued from Page 4)
beet plants in Canada produc-
ing some 20 per cent of the
sugar consumed in this country.
Eighty percent of the sugar
used in the three prairie prov-
inces is from beets grown in
Manitoba and Alberta.
The Manitoba Sugar Comp-
any began operations in 1940.
Since then it has gone through
many stages of research, pro-
cessing and expansion. One of
its biggest selling points is that
revenue derived from the sale
of its product remains in Mani-
toba, with almost two thirds of
that money going back to the
beet growers. I enjoy writing
figures in several digits like
this—under normal conditions
the 30,000 odd acres contracted
by Manitoba growers say in
1962, when harvested would
make possible the production
of 80 million pounds of sugar.
Add to the total of the sugar
crop the income from the by-
products and the amount adds
up to $8.000,000! No other crop
in western agriculture can pro-
duce a crop equal in value to
one acre of sugar beets, Mr.
McDiarmid pointed out, rather
proudly.
I learned while being shown
through the factory that noth-
ing is wasted from the manu-
facture of beet sugar. Not even
the steam that vaporizes from
the diffusers as the beet pulp
is put through presses to re-
move the water content. This
is recovered as distilled water
and used again in various stag-
es of processing and as a supply
of pure water for the boilers.
Some of the beet tops event-
ually end up as silage or fert-
ilizer and the by-product known
as Dried Molasses Beet Pulp is
a valuable livestock feed.
The last of my tour of this
tremendously interesting plant
was to the huge pits where
from late August until October
the Canadian National Railway
dumps carload after carload of
beets that have been harvested.
topped and put through a pro-
cess of shaking the dirt from
their roots. These are loaded
by trucks into the train's cars
from farms within a radius of
75 miles from the factory.
