When the W C T 17 and the Royal Tem- plars, of Ingersoll, made an engagement with Mrs Owen Bitohcox, of Paris, Ont, to address a series of foul! meetings they undertook a great responsibllinv, but by active, energetic work they hoped to amain - piish much good for the people. Mrs .Hitebcox is the only lady singer. lecturer in Canada, and the only Canadian who has the honor of being qn the list of the New York National Lecture Bureau. 4Sheis a good soprano solo singer, and as a lecturer and exhorter she has few if any equals. Atter her opening meeting on Sun- day afternoon, the 6th alt, when herpower and ability became known, the town hall was packed to the doors by a very orderly and appreciative 'audience. Hor fervent enthusiasm, persuasive eloquence, and distinct articulation soon won her the ad% miration u£ her hearers and inspired them • with higher and nobler resolves for future work in the lineof social reformation and the overthrow of the liquor traffic. During her stay there there were several other - strong counter -attractions in the various churches, which were each doing good iu their own individual ways, but still there were large crowds at each of her meetings, and so much enthusiasm had been aroused -and such a grand work was being done for prohibition that she was persuaded to give up her two days of rest which she usually claims for her own, and on Wednesday evening sho had another grand meeting in the town hall and another iu King Street church"on Thursday evening. One of the many good results of these meetings was' that.407 people signed the pledge of total abstinence, many df them for the first „time, and some of these were then who were generally recognized as moderate drinkers if not confirmed drunkards. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed throughout the entire series of meetings and so great was the number who donned the small pieces of blue ribbon, as total 'abstainers, that the supply'of ribbon was exhausted. 'Not for a long time past has there been such a great revival of temperance interest aroused in the community as ou this ocoasion, and the W 0 '1' tY and Ii, T of T will try to keep up the movement coutinu ously with increased vigor. 14frs Iiiteheox possesses the rare talent of personal Magnetism, which, combined ' 'with a pleasing personal appearance, a powerful, though sweet and clearvoioe, aud a profound pathos in 'her exhortations, makes bee a powerful advocate for prohi- • bition, Silo is a remarkably fluent and distinct speaker, one who exercises groat power over her audieuee, and the logic of her arguments, based' on • a vast, fund of practical knowledge sad personal expere iexiee as a lecturer, makes her a valuable aid in Aron otiug the work she feels it her duty to devote her time and talents to, The above account of Mrs 1Iitchcex, the Gospel Temperance lecture-singer,is taken from the Paris T eit►tcript.
