, A Judges Sentence ou the Rumseuer•
The following utterances of Judge
Hubbard, of Nebraska, in passing sen-
tence open some convicted run)sellers,
are worthy of ropetititiu, for they con--
tain vital truths which should be
brought home to every rumstiller fn
land who deals out ruin and death to
his fellow -creatures :
The Journey of LH..
After all, is this life anything but a
terrible journey without repo's»,, and

country i You were a child ; you are
a young man ; you may become an
old man, Do you believe you shall
find as much difference between two
persona, however remote from each
other they may be, as between you a
child°and yolk an old man ' man 1 You are
in childhood --the man is there with
his, fair hair,his bold,limpid glance,and
his light and joyous heart; he loves
every one, and every one seems to love
him ; everything gives him something
and everything promises him still much
more. There' is nothing which does
not pay him a tribute of joy, nothing
which•for him is not a plaything. The
butterflies in the air, the blue -bottles
in the corn fields, the Band of the seas
shore, the herbage of the meadows,
the green alleys of the forest—all give
him" pleasure, all -whisper to him
promises of mystic happiness. You
arrive at youth ; " the body is active
and strong, the heart noble and disin-
terested. There_ you violently break
the playthings of your childhood and
s iiile at the importance you once at-
tacked to them, because you have some
fresh playthings with which you are as
much in earnest as , you were with
your tops and balls ; now is the turn
of friendship, love, heroism and de.
votedness—you have all these within
you, and you look for them in others•

"There is something in the taking
of human life instantaneously chat
shooks and terrifies the mind of all
' and yet We look upon that man who
takes life quite as surely, but by a slow
lingering process, if not without eon-
demnation, at least without horror.
You who stand before the Court for
sentence • are in every moral sense
murderers, and you are in the, spirit if ,
not in the letter, guilty of man-
slaughter,so, the law'says that whoever
accelerates the 'death of athuman
.being unlawfully is guilty of the crime.
Your bloated victims upon the witness
stand and who undoubtedly committed
perjury to screen you from the Ia6yv,
not only to abundantly testify that you
are accelerating- death, but that you
are inducing 'nee to commit still great-
er crimes than ygur own. You still
maintain the appearance of responsi-
, bility, but how morally, leperhus and
scrofulous you are inwardly 1 'The
ruin, poverty and idleness which you
are inflicting upon this community
declare, as if from.the housetops, that
you are living in idleness and eating
the bread' of orphans, watered with
.widow's 'tears. You are stealthily
killing your victims and murdering
the peace and industry of the com-
munity, and thereby converting happy
industrious homes in misery, poverty
anti rags. Envious mothers watch
and, pray in tears nightly, with deso-
late hearts, for the coming home of
your victims, whom you are luring,
with the wiles and smiles of the devil,
into lniduight debauchery.

Pneumonia.
Carlessness in regard to draughts, 1
and prolonged exposure to cold, ,often
brings on pneumonia which is,perhaps
the most dreaded of alt our common
diseases. While it is true of this, as
of colds, that it may usually ho0pre.
vented by a careful observance of the
laws of health, yet when it does attack
robust, and vigorous persons, it fre-
quently proves fatal.
Pneumonia 18 8o swift in its course

a physician should always be summon-
ed at the first indication elite approach.

relieve the pain.
For all, the strong as well as the
delicate, the wisest course is to use the
ounce of prevention in order not to
need the pound of cure.' . Going to
the door with callers who insist on
lingering on the steps for the conclu-
sion of their call,is a frequent and un-
necessary way of inviting pneumonia.
