Tb:e Great Double Scull Race.
I1ANLAN AND o'CONNOR WIN.
Somewhere about 15,000 people
witnessed the great double scull race
at Hamilton on Saturday afternoon
for the world's championship. The.
men were in good condition, and the
water smooth, It was exactly 7
o'clock wheu a start wa@,at last made,
and it was a beautiful ,one, Both
ore ys , got away together, Rankin
and O'Connor pulling 86 strokes to
the minute, and Gaudaur and McICay
35. It was nip and tuck forthe first
300 yards, but after that point the
Toronto double had the race well in
hand. The mile post was passed in
5:25 by Hanlan and O'Connor, who
were then over a length in,advance of
their opponents, and pulling only 30
strokes to the minute, while Gaudaur
and McKay were still pulling hard at
35. At the mile and a Half buoy the
Toronto crew made a beautiful
turn, while the !oaera in the race made
a very ugly one, and lost fully a boat
length by their poor work there. The
mile and a half stake was reached by
the winners in 8 minutes 35 seconds.
On the home reach the leaders did not
exert themselves to auy extent, and
w hen within a quarter of a mile of
the finish they stopped rowing and
Hanlan dipped his hand into the bay.
The losing crew were still pulling hard
at.their old pace, and managed to gain
a couple of lengths by this maneuver
on the part of the Toronto crew. The
result, however, was unchanged, and
Hanlan and O'Connor arrived at the
finish winners by fully .four boat
lengths in 18 ' minutes 26i seconds.
Many people were disappointed that
the three -Mile -record was not lowered,
and it is generally thought that the
Toronto crew could have accomplished
the feat had they wished to do so.

in favor of the Gorrie club by sixteen
points. -Mr S.A Seaman, who was

will be greatly missed here, as he was
an obliging agent and a genial, good
