O'itr` Agricultural experimental stations are tieing a grand work fol' the world, and more especially for the farmers, Once in the history of Ireland, famine resulted from the prevalence of the potato rot, Such an"ocourrerice need not again be repeated in any country of the world, as potatoes may „pow be almost aa effectively shielded from the disease known as potato rot as "from the attacks of the Colorado beetle. Experiments have been carried on during recent years at the Vermont State Experiment Station which prove conclusively that the disease known as potato rot may be kept at bay. It is now known pretty generally that the dry rot of the tuber and the blight of the top of the plant are both caused by a parasitic plant or fungus called phytopbthora infestans, The dry rot kills the tuber and the wet rot follows as a natural result. file growth of the fungus is apparently dependent Jo a Considerable extent on the weather. 'It is more freely developed in warm, moist weather. The treatment to prevent the rot or to check it after it has made its ape pearanee consists of an application known as the Bordeaux Mixture. It id made by dissolving in water 6lbs; of copper sulphate (blue vitriol), and 4 ltes, of fresh lime or 61bs, of aireslaked limo in water. Six pounds of copper sulphate in crystals is about 2i qts., and when powdered, 2 qts. Four pounds of lime, iinslaked, and in pieces the size of a pigeon's egg, make 21 - qts, and the same amount slaked is 9tival to 3 qts. Dissolve the copper; sulphate in 8 to 10 gals. of cold water; or 2 to 3 gals. of hot water. Use a wooden tub, as • the copper sulphate injures an iron vessel. After the lime has been slaked, add water enough to make' a thin whitewash and strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove all lumps, and then pour slow- ly jute; the copper solution. Add water enough to make 22 gals. of the whole mixtu e•!f to be applied ev'ith a 'spray. ing pump, or 33 gals. if to be applied with a watering pot. As the mixture tends to settle to the bottom; it must be stirred before using. The use of a• spraying pump with a good nozzle is considered preferable to the watering `stpot in applying the mixture. The kpsack sprayer is considered suitable for small plots, but for large fields those should be used which are drawn by horse power. The number of applications will de- pend .on the season, but in seasons favorable to the spread of the disease at least four or five applications will be required. The first application should not be later than the blight upon the leaves. The spraying should be re. peated every two ;weeks until the plants are out of danger. Where fears are entertained of the blight, it.would•be well to apply the mixture alone/ with the Paris green application for the d struction of bsetles. When thug ap- pTied in an ordinary season no other application will be necessary;and much time is saved by accomplishing both objects at one and the same time. Enough of the mixture should be ape plied to moisten the leavas thoroughly. To do this requires from 40 to 60 gals. per acre, and the cost of the mixture • is about 2c. per gal. The bulletin giving this valuable information was prepared by Prof. L. R. J`oned, of the Experimental Station, Burlington, Verrnorlt.
