Area rarmers Attend
Dairy Short Course
A two-day short course for
dairy farmers at Centralia's Col-
lege of Agricultural Technology
was well attended.
A total of 48 farmers and far-
mers wives from five countie§.
listened to top speakers on many
topics important to the dairy ind4 ;
ustry.
Don Orth and Doug Jamieson
of the College teaching staff were
on the list of speakers along with
Dr. Gaylen Josephson of the Vet-
erinary College, Milk Com-
mission fieldman Ian Kennedy,
Smiles . .

a "has been," .and a "spurt"
is a drip under pressure.

Orth discussed profitable
feeding of dairy Cattle while Jam -
ieson looked into nutrition of the
j dairy cow and understanding of
reproduction.
Dr. Josephson talked about
diseases affecting fertility and
the prevention and control of
mastitis and Mr. Kennedy's topic
was on maintaining milk quality.
Dr. Atkinson discussed prob-
lems at calving time and im-
provement of herd fertility was
the subject of Dr. Banbury's
address.
Doug Jamieson who was also
co-ordinator of the event said
the counties of Huron, Perth,
Middlesex, Bruce and Lambton
were represented.
Jamieson said two points were
stressed throughout the two-day
course. '•We stressed supplying
suffi6ient energy by the way of
proteins and minerals for high
production and fertility in feed-
ing and as far as breeding was
concerned the emphasis was on
shortening of the calving interval
to -give higher produCtion per
cow and more calves," added
the Centralia staff member.

The holiday season has al-
ways been a time of gift giving,
good will and merrymaking. On
December 25 the Romans cele-
brated the winter solstice that
time after the dark days of win-
ter when the sun began to shine
for a longer time each day. The
ancient Teutonic peoples ob-
servers the great mid-winter fest-
ival of yule with traditional
feasts and new year rites.
Then as now, work and bus-
iness were suspended for a
time. Streets became full of- •
people moving with a holiday
spirit. Cries of season's greet-
ings could be heard everywhere,
and gifts of all sorts were ex-
changed.
Today for young, and old alike
the custom of exchanging gifts
is one of the highpoints of the
holiday season. Gifts of all
sorts, sizes and shapes have
become symbols of our affec-
tion for one another. Everyone
seems to share in the fun of
giving.

is sometimes' overlooked dur-
ing the holiday season that can
