The skidding was done with a small crawler tractor so the tractor pads would stir up the ground,expose the mineral soil, and thus create a suitable seed bed to encouage cedar regeneration. In addition, the brush was distributed evenly over the strips to allow faster deterioration of slash and build up of the organic layer of humus. Through this project Depart- ment of Lands and Forests staff', hope to find out additional inform- ation concerning the management requirements of local cedar for- est stands and so develop new and better techniques for the manage- rrmt of these stands in the future. It is hoped that the strip treatment will result in success- ful cedar regeneration on the clear cut strips. The project , in Osprey Town- ship, covers an area of 13 acres. The stand consists of dense mat- ure cedar trees with average height of 40 feet and stemp diam- eters up to 16 inches. It con- sists of both swamp and upland types" which have an age of approximately 60 years. Six strips ( ea,ch 33 feet wide and 660 feet long), were cut in a northeasterly direction at right angles to ,the prevailing winds. Intervals of 0-6 feet were left between the strips to provide shelter and protection to the clear cut strips and also to provide a source of seed to regenerate them.
