Urges Safe
Driving Care
Safe Driving Week (December
1 - 7) is an ironic cornmeht on
huma n behavior according to
Huron MPP and Minister of
Transport and Communications,
Hon. Charles MacNaughton. It
is an attempt to prove, through
one week's special effort and
attention, that the agony of traf-
fic deaths and sufferings can be
reduced if motorists adopt de-
fensive driving habits, Mr. Mac-
Naughton said in a statement
commenting on the special week.
The winter months tend to be
a high collision period, though the
number of deaths and injuries
tapers off. December is no
longer the disastrous month it
used to be as drivers respond to
the need for safety Under heavy
weather conditions and the in-
tensity of pre-Ghristmas police
spot-checks. But a lot of bad
driving practices reappear when
the spot-checks end and the snow
has gone.
The province of Ontario be-
lieves the effective way to
overcome the dangers to human
life created by a large mobile
population is for each driver to
acknowledge personal responsi-
bility for his safety and that of
others. To drive defensively. To
assume the other person may not
do the same.
Let's resolve that we won't
try to teach the other driver a
lesson, no matter how stupid he
seems, no matter how angry he
makes us. Let's control our-
selves and our cars Mr. Mac-
Naughton urged,, protect our-
selves - and ,if the 'other guy
really is stupid and irrespon-
sible, let's do our best to protect
him too - by avoiding him. Next
week and every week.
