These trails can help cut down on snow- mobile mishaps because they are professionally constructed and maintained. Well-designed trails give snowmobilers' interesting winter landscape to explore under con- trolled conditions. While snowmobile safety ex- perts advise snow machine oper- ators to utilize planned trails, winter recreation officials point out the need for more trails to accommodate more than 1 mil- lion snowmobiles now in use in North America. "State parks and other major recreation areas should recog- nize their responsibility to the winter outdoor activist by providing him with use areas similar to the space offered summer park users," says John W. Hethrington. "Safety experts tell us accidents decrease in con- trolled use area trail systems, which gives park and recreation areas definite potentials to further serve the public." Mr. Hethrington pointed out that public and private use areas increased greatly last year but more are needed to fill the needs of the vast number of new snow- mobile owners.: SCHEDULED HIGHWAYS: Schedules listing specific high- ways are incorporated in the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act and Regulations.
