Half Million
Snowmobiles
It's an open secret th..
deep, snowy silence of the nor
thern woodlands has been awak-
ened by the muted roar of snow-
mobile engines.
Not so•well recognize'd Is the
winter "boom" of unimagined
...economic proportions arising
-from these same lithe snow ma-
chines.
According to U. S. and Can-
adian manufactiirers shipped a
record 505,000 snowmobiles last
winter, resulting in retail sales
approaching $600-million!
Two immediately obvious
economic benefits are thousands
of new manufacturing jobs,
mostly in the snowbelt itself, and
_dramatic increases in sales for
boat dealers and marinas, lawn-
and-garden stores and other
snowmobile retailers in the same
area.
That's just the obvious part.
Even more startling is the
impact of snowmobile usage. It
begins with huge purchases of
lubricants, spark plugs and other
parts, and -as much as 100'-million
extra gallons of gasoline for the
estimated 1-million machines
on the continent.
Add to, this the purchase of
special winter clothing (much
of it ever more fashionable and
expensive), trailers, tools and
accessories'', unprecedented win-
ter occupancy of northland motels
and resorts, and hearty con-
sumption of food by the snow-
mobilers - and you have .the
ingredients of a new, snow-
mobile-based $1.8-billion econ-
omic boom in the snowbelt!

Mrs.Ethel Thiel
Mrs. Calvin Christie, Crom-

Women's Institute District gave
an interesting commentary on
slides of a trip which she and
her husband took last year to
Australia and New Zealand. Their
trip was mostly by air stopping
at principal. cities. The
mountainous country made
travelling through the country
quite hazardous. Interested in
farming, The Christies were dis-
appointed as they were not
allowed to visit many farms, but
many of their pictures showed
vast fields of sheep, also many
wild animals, native to the
country.
Mrs. Robert K. Clarke, Mrs.

was answered by naming a farm
product not grown in Perth-

of members in December. Mrs.
Peppier gave a report' of the
events planned at the South Perth
District Directors meeting when
they were asked to consider
catering to the Farm Home Im-
provement contestants. Goulds
were mentioned as a group to
take charge. Mrs. Irene Keutsch,
St. Pauls and Mrs. Wilfred See -
bach, Sebringville, were
appointed to plan the celebration
of the 75th Anniversary of the
