U,C.W. MEETS
The United Church Women
met Thursday evening with the
president Mrs. William Dowson
leading in Thanksgiving medita-
tion. Mrs. Ron Taylor read the
Scripture and a reading "Lee us
Give Thanks". Mrs. Charles Reid
gave the meditation and prayer
was given by Mrs. Ron Taylor.
There were thfrty-five calls
made to sick and shut-ins during
September. A Thank you letter
from Mission Services of Lon=
don for a bale of useful articles
which was sent recently, was
read. Mrs. Fred McClymont took
up the offering and it was ded-
icated by Mrs. Perce Johnston..

need the additional exhibits to
advertise the county hosting the
match' in 1972.
John Stephens, Perth's direc-
tor on the OPA, collected names
of 34 peeple who will attend the
banquet at the 1971 IPM on Oct.
15. Mr. Ashton asked for volun-
teers to man the county's tent at
the '71 match froth Oct., 12 tpoct.
16. Almost all the committee
chairmen will be at the match, and
some will have, their committee
members with them to learn more
abouf their job.
ROBERT S. BEATTIE
Robert Smith Beattie, 91, of
Seaforth, died in Seaforth Com-
munity Hospital Sunday after an
illness of five weeks.
The son, of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Beattie, he was
a farmer in Hullett Township and
a well-knoWn area thresher be-
fore retiring to Winthrop in 1948.
He was married in 1907 ineaven
Church Manse, Winthrop, to M.
Elizabeth Kinney, who prede-
ceased him May 30, 1967.
Mr. Beattie is survived by
one daughter, Mrs. George (Mar-
garet) Michie of Brussels; two
sons, T. Stewart of Wingham, R.
Leslie of Seaforth; two sisters,
Mrs. Stanley (Agnes) Garnham,
and Mrs. Edward (Margaret)
Case, both of Seaforth; seven
grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.
The body was-at the R. S. Box
funeral home, where the service
was held Wednesday at 2 p.m.
conducted by 11ev. M. E. Reuber.
Burial followed in Maitlandbank
cemetery.

Clure, Harry Rapson, George
Smith and George Case. Flower-
bearers were John L. Taylor
and Robe. J. Campbell.

Thomas B. (Benny) Williams,
64, of Main Street, Seaforth, died
suddenly at his home Friday.
Born in Summerside, P.E,I.,
he married his wife, the former

Ideal weather conditions con-
tributed to the success of the
Perth County PlownienkS Annual
Plowing Match held at the farm of
George Wilson.
An estimated crowd of 400
attended.
Sheila Armstrong, R. R. 2,
St. Pauls, won the title,, Queen
of the Furrow and received her
crown from Walter Mogk, presi-
dent of the Perth County Plow-
men's Association. Runner-up
was Lois Barton of R. R. 2, At-
wood. Other contestants were
Margaret Rutherford, R. R. 1,
Stratford; Dianne Scott, R.R. I,
Mitchell; Pat Chafe, R. R. 5,
Mitchell; and Judy Morgan, R.
R. 5, Stratford.
Judges were Mrs. Evan
Uolmes, R. R. 1, Newton, and
Miss Amy Stewart, McKillop
Township. Miss Stewart was
Queen of the furrow in 1969
when the Plowing Match was held
at Seaforth.
The girls were judged on
their speech, 'The Role of The
International Plowing Match in
Agriculture"; personality; inter-
view and plowing.
. The Queen of the Furrow
Competition was arranged by
Reeve Albert Carson of Wallace,
chairman of the special events
committee for the 1972 IPM. He
was assisted by Bruce Aitcheson,
R. R. 2, St. Pauls, secretary for
the Plowmen's Association.
-Miss'Armstrong will compete
at the International Plowing
Match in Halidmand County.
"We hope, Sheila, that you'll
win the crown at the international
so we have a Perth girl reigning
Queen when we host the Inter-
national Plowing Match next year
at Sebringville" said Reeve Al-
bert Carson in extending best
wishes to the winner.
Willard Mohr, past reeve of
North Easthope Township, and a
former warden of Perth County
won the horse drawn walking
plow competition. Wilbert
Herman, reeve of Ellice Town-.
Doris Dyment, in P. E. I., and
settled in this district in 1965
as the CNR ticket- agent here.
A member of the RCc Calgary
Tank Regiment, he served in the
armed forces from 1940 fo 1945
much of the time as a prisoner of
war following his ,capture at
Dieppe.
He was a member ef St., James
Roman Catholic Church, He is
survived by his wife and one
sister,. Miss Edna Williams of
Sumnierside, P.E.I.
Funeral services and burial
took place inSummerside,P.E.I.,
funeral arrangements here being
in charge of the G. A. Whitney
funeral home.
MRS- EDMUND,GODKIN
The funeral service for the
late Mrs. Edmund Godkin, held
in the Box funeral home on Thurs-
day, October 7, 1971 was con-
ducted by Rev. M. E. Reuber and
Rev. J, C. Britton. Interment
followed in Maitlandbank ceme-
tery, Pallbearers were Charles
Godkin, John Coming, Bev. Alex-
ander, David Livingston, Stanley
Hillen and Dave Watson. Flower-
beaeeeis were grandchildren,
Bryan Godkin, Steven Dennis,
,Peggy Dennis, Linda Godkin,
Dianne Godkin and Tammy Beu-
ermann.
IAN MacTAVISH
The sudden death occurred
in Montreal on October 7th of
Ian Edward 'MacTavish. He was
in his 56th year.
Mr. MacTavish was waiting
for a bus on a, street corner
when he was stricken.
Born in Seaforth, he was the
eldest son of Mrs. MacTavish
and the late John MacTavish.
He attended Seaforth schools and
graduated from the Seaforth Col-
legiate Institute. Interested
electronics, he enlisted in the
RCAF on the outbreak of war.
Commissioned on completion of
training he served overseas for
the duration.
Following his rettrernent. he
served for several years as a
..pilot with KIX the Dutch air
lines, and later in 1951 returned
ship and current county warden,
placed second, and Reeve John
L. McKay of Downie Township
was third.
Through lack of participation
by the mayors in.the county, this
class was omitted.

finish: Norman Chaffe, Mitchell.

furrow utility: Paul Dunsmore,
Stratford. First, best crown and
best finish: Barry Gordon, John

In the junior classes, winners

only entry. Mounted or trail:

finish: Richard Graul, second and
best crown.
In the horseshoe pitching Con-
test, Kenneth Smith of Morikton
and Fred Harburn, Staffa, won
their class; Ernie Harburn and
Horace Salt, Cromarty, won their
class; and Joseph Smith and Al
Harburn were winners.

Velma Rivers of Toronto, who
survives, together with three
sons Lauchloh, Duncan and Don-
ald J. and two daughters, Kath-
erine 'and Martha. Hp is also
survived by his mother Mrs.
John MacTavish of Se,aforth and
brother Donald Argyle of Tor-
onto. He was predeceased by
a brother Oban.
Funeral services were held
atlhe Mount Royal Crematorium
on October 9th and private inter-
ment will follow in Staffa ceme-
tery.

T. Herbert Coombs, 83, of
Egmondville died in Kilbarchan
Nursing Home Friday following
a two-year illness.
A native of Winthrop, he at-
tended school in McKillop but
had spent most of his life in
Egmondville. He was a son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Coombs. .
An engineer, Mr. Coombs had
been employed' bythe Robert
Bell Engine and Thresher Co.
at Se,aforth for 47 years. He
retired in 1956.
He was married to &former •
Amy Warden at Egmondville in
1914. "1 She predeceased him in
1967. He, is survived by five .
sons, Palmer H. of London,
Cleave C. and Raymond M., both
of Egmondville, Kenneth W. of
Seaforth, and Wesley C. of Har-
purhey.
He was predeceased by two
sons. He had fourteen grand-
children and one great-grand-
child.
Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Monday at the R.S. Box
funeral home conducted by Rev.
M. E. Reuber. Burial followed
in Egmondville cemetery.
Pallbearers were John F.
Flannery, Lutien Hemberger,
Terrence Hussey, Emmerson
Durst, Harold Pethick, and Glen
Smith. Flowerbearers were
grandchildren: Elaine Coombs,
Susan Coombs, Kathy Coombs,
Patricia Coombs, Wayne Coombs
and Christopher Coombs.

hurch Groups Hold \Monthly Meetings
. United' Church last Sunday was
well attended with the pastor,
Rev. Murdock Morrison in
charge. The choir under the dir-
ection of-Mrs, Doug McAsh, sang
a Thanksgiving anthem.
The Service will be withdrawn
next Sunday in the United Church
owing to Afiniversary Services
in Goshen United Church.-

CWL Meets
The C.W.L. met Tuesday eve-
ning with Mrs. John Maloney pre-
siding.
Plans were made for' the
bazaar which is to be held in
early December,
Father Laragh presented' an
interesting tape of the Bishop's
meeting in Rome, under the
direction of Archbishop Plouard
of Quebec.
The mystery prize was won
by Mrs. William Box.
