HE'S ALWAYS HAPPY
This happy baby Is Timiny, eight months old. Canadian
Negro in descent, he 'is a sturdy boy with beautiful big dark
eyes and medium-brown skin. He has sparse dark hair which
is beginning to curl. His, health is good, apart from. a tendency •
to colds.
Timmy is a cuddly, lovable, good-natured baby. His foster
mother says if he isn't smiling he's laughing. •If he cries she,
knows something is really distressing him. He's a good eater
and he sleeps well. Timmy isn't craWling yet, but he gets
around With considerable speed by lying on his tummy and
pulling himself along the floor with his arms.
Other children are a delight to Timmy and he is used to
being with them. Young as he is he's learning to play ball by
rolling it with a pair of toddlers in his foster home.
• Timmy likes people and has never been shy, though he
looks strangers over for a minute or' two before deciding to
be friends.
This baby needs parents who will appreciate a *lively,
sunny-tempered young son. To inquire about adopting Timmy,
• please write to Today's Child, Department of Social and
• Family Services, Parliament.,Buildings, Toronto 182. FOr
general adoption information, ask your Children's Aid Society.

Storedrood Reserves
Cut Alfalfa Winterkill
In Ontario, cutting or grazing
alfalfa during certain fall periods
will lower the next year's yield
or even cause winterkill. Pro-
fessor R. S. Fulkerson, Crop
Science Department, University
of Guelph, says this critical fall
harvest date is very important for
a healthy crop.
Alfalfa and other perennial
forages must store food reserves
to prevent them from dying over
the winter. These reserves make
the plant resistant to low winter
temperatures and also help to
initiate growth in the spring.
• To store the most plant food,
alfalfa should not be grazed or
cut for three weeks before or
after the critical fall harvest
date. This date varies through-
out Ontario, from about Ocotber
1 in the southerly alfalfa-growing
regions to approximately Sep-
tember 10 in the more northerly
areas.
After several severe frosts,
late fall browsing can he re-
stimed , says Professor Ful-
kerson. However, he cautions,
never cut or graze too late in
the late fall. A minimum top of
8 inches should be left to hold
the snow, provide insulation
against low temperatures and
prevent ice sheets from forming
on the crowns of the plants.
Winterkill can develop with
continued early harvest of
legumes. For the highest pro-
tein content, farmers are advised
to cut the legume at the first
flower stage. However, this
does not permit sufficient time
for root reserves to be re-
plenished, and without reserve
food, there is the danger-' of
winterkill. Therefore, legumes
harvested at the first flower
stage should be allowed the en-

tire fall period to replenish these -
reserves, says Professor Ful-
ker son.
One added measure, he says,
is adequate fertility for the forage
stand. This e ,,sures good yields
and persistence, since a good
crop may remove over 200 pounds
of potash and 50 pounds of phos-.
phortig annually from the soil.
For best results, fertilize ac-
cording to a soil test prior to the
critical harvest date in your area.,
