year .or two but after a while'
they acquire new friehds and
interests and their wartime as-
sociations are negleCted.
Comrades of a certain Regi-
ment that I have in mind have not
lost touch with their wartime
buddies. After twenty-six years
they still hold a reunion annually
and it is attended by three hundred
veterans ,or • more. The only
difference between this regiment
and any other is that they haVe
a bond stronger than most in
that one man, respected and loved
by anyone who has ever come in
contact with him, holds them to-
gether. The Regimental Sergeant
Major in most units was not d.
popular man, yet in this regiment
it is none other than the R.S.M.
who holds this association to-
gether over the years. We will
call this man R.S.M. Angus -
a real disciplinarian, but fair,
and if any men were charged by
him they knew that they had it
coming. He held the respect
and admiration of the whole regi-
ment all through the war, and he
has worked for the regimental
association ever since.
A few years ago it was decided
that a Memorial would be built
to those who were killed during
World War II while serving with
the Regiment and that the funds
would come ONLY from the men
of the unit. In foiii -Trionths
$7,800. was collected and the
Memorial was erected which
bears the names of those who
gave their lives.
I am quite sure that if it had
not been for the respect the men
had for R.S.M. Angus, thelVlerno-
rial Fund would have had to accept•
monies from sources other than
the men themselves. The R.S.M.
is,truly the heart and soul of this
Regiment. He is now retired as
a Lieutenant-Colonel but to these
men he will always be known af-
fectionately as their R.S.M.
