TAte Mitchell Advocate reports that Mr. and Mrs.
August Ahrens, R.R. 5, Mitchell, observed their Golden
Wedding anniversary recently with a dinner in First
Lutheran Church, Logan. This was followed by an Open
House at .their home during the afternoon and evening.- - -
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Jackson of Simcoe celebrated their
Golden Wedding anniversary recently with a family dinner
at Port Dover. They were married in 1921 in Mitchell.
The bride was the former Marjorie. Elliot, a daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Elliot. They have two sons and
three grandchildren.- - - Mr. William Ireland marked
his 91st birthday on Saturday and was entertained at a
dinner. by Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Smith. Mrs. Jean Taylor's
birthday was the same day.
The Wingham Advance-Times reports that the town's
police cruiser is proving to be a nemesis for Police
Committee chairman William Harris because of the number
of times the car is off the road. In his report Monday
night he told Council the cruiser had once again gone to
the repair garage in Listowel. It had also been in the
garage three times between June 9th and July 8 and police
drivers still find trouble with it. The cruiser was purchased
in January 19'70 and only 1,500 miles remain before the
warranty expires and now a new motor is required. Mr.
Harris said that under the warranty General Motors is
prepared to keep on making repairs but will not install -
a new engine. "If another engine is installed, it will have
to be at our expense, said Mr. Harris, adding that he is
still in contact with the Listowel garage, who is trying to
arrange "something" with General Motors. - - - The
Wingham Fire Department was given the authority Monday
night by council to negotiate with fire departments of
Teeswater and Lucknow to establish a working agreement
under the mutual aid system. - - - Mr. Bill Henderson,
Joseph Street, Wingham will mark a half century of tonsorial
service and looking back he estimates 208,000 customers
have sat in his' chair. Bill is a barber by trade and on
the basis of the clippings from 40 heads averaging one pound
of hair, his broom has swept about 5,200 pounds into waste
containers.. It was in 193'7 that he set up his own shop in
-winghann7,--He---was--born-at_Shallow Lake where Eugene
Loos taught him the trade in 1921.
The real prize, according to the Zurich Citizens News,
is one of the biggest tomato plants seen in many years
which has been grown by Jack McKone, of Zurich. The
plant measures over eight feet in height and is bearing
a total of 39 perfect tomatoes, all uniform in size and
quality. The plant used a television aerial for support.
- - - Sandra Graham, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Mel Graham, of Brucefield, was chosen last week
to play in the Canadian Senior Ladies' Fastball finals.
She was one of two players picked up by the Kitchener
Kieswetters, the All-Ontario Senior Fastball Champions,
who will represent Ontario in the Canadian Finals. Later
this month, Sandra will join the Kitchener Club in a five-
day tournament to be held in Calgary. She is presently
playing senior ladies fastball with the Milverton Winston-
ettes. Prior to going to Milverton, Sandra was the top
catcher for the Brucefield Ladies Fastball Club, and was
one of the stars of the team.

Retail in Toronto reported 22,000
cans returned the first week.
. That's only' 5% of the 50,000
dozen or so cans sold each week,
but it's a start.
"But the 'soft drink people'
don't seem to care" said Jack
Stafford, President of Huron
County Federation ,of Agricul-
ture, "if the brewing industry
can offer compensation for re-
turned beer bottles - and now
beer cans, I see no reason why
the soft drink manufacturers
shouldn't, too."
The brewers give a two
cent rebate on returned bottles,

They get 96% of their bottles

According to Murray Gaunt,
Huron-Bruce M.P.P., who twice
introduced bills to ban non-re-

concern than the soft drink
manufacturers, although the soft
