The Legion Executive and their wives were royally enter- tained by Comrade President Cleave Coombs and Mrs. Coombs at their Egmondville home on Saturday evening. Comrade Roily Russell, District Commander was also a guest. He was accom- panied by,Mrs. Russell. Comrade Russell was awarded a humorous citation in the form of a poem by Mrs. peg Coombs, -and was also presented with a gift in keeping with the citation. Past District Commander, Comrade Allan Nicholson en- gaged the District Commander in an exchange of good-natured jesting and advide on how to be successful in the post 44District Commander, to which Roily Rus- sell replied appropriately. The sur- vivors were rescued by the Canadian destroyer "St. Laurent". July 3, 1940 - The King and Queen rejected the suggestions to ev- acuate Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret to Canada. The Royal Navy seized a ,French battleship in a British port, sank one French battle- ship,, and one aircraft carrier at Oran, North Africa. (The French 'Navy was under German control at the tipie.) July 8, 1940- Nova Heotia'a Premier, Angus L. MacDonald became Navy Minister. July 9, 1940- France became a • Corporative State under Pe- tain, with its Capital at Vichy. July 10, 1940- 'The German Luftwaffe hammered ship- ping and harbours as the Battle of Britain began. July 11, 1940 - Pilot Officer D. A. Hewitt was the first Can- adian killed in the Battle of Britain. - July 21, 1940 - Anglo-Canadian 7th Corps came into existence and was commanded. by Can- ada's Major General`A. G. L. MCNaiighttrif-- who-was -- prom-- - oted to Lieutenant General. - PAST EVENTS Bingo last Friday, June 25th attracted 8 6 persons and prizes to the value of $320.00 were won. COMING EVENTS Bingo on Friday evening July 2nd it the Legion Hall. Windup for Summer Winding pp business for, the summer was the order of the day at last Friday's session of Huron County Council in Goder- ich. Reports from various committees and county officers were heard and approved by council and members were trea- ted to two picture presentations Including slides depicting the work of the Huron County Heat Unit and a film entitled "Wherever There Are Children" and shown by Bruce Heath, direc- tor of the Huron County Children's Aid Society. This latter film, Heath noted, is available for showing to any group in Huron County who expresses an interest and maybe. had by making arrangements through the CAS office in Goder- ich. In a brief report to council, Heath explained that for the first time in years, there is a lack of children eligible for adoption. He did stress that this trend has its good side in that all children in care up to the age of four years have been adopted and that more and more children of multi-racial backgrounds are being placed in homes. A library report showed that the following new librarians have been appointed; Mrs. Isabelle Shortreed at Walton: J. W. Elgin Porter at Varna; 'Mrs. Mel Becker at Cranbrook; and Mrs. 'Mary Ann Martin at St. Helen's. 1 :6 -DEAR DORIS - I am a 14-year-old girl, and all of ;my girl friends are ailowed-to":smoke. girl friends over last week and - they gave me a cigarette. My father came home unex- pectedly and he saw me smok- ing. Before I knew what was happening I Was across his•knee and getting the spanking of my life. My girl friends are -laughing and kidding me. Don't you think Dad was un- fair in punishing me in front - of my'friends? • - Marlene, DEAR DORIS I am keeping company with . a man who was raised in the country and always did heavy work.
