DEAR MARLENE - That's for
sure. It was rude, unfair.
Shouldn't happen to a 14-year-
old.
Your father probably saw red.
.. To 'have a daughter of his start
a, filthy,- unhealthy habit like
smoking-was just too much. His
immediate reaction was to nip it
in the bud.. Once you are hooked
,on the filthy weed, you are likely
to have trouble getting free of it.
I know all the other argu-
nients: that you want to do what
the others do, and you don't want
them to think you are a prude.'
What's how I started smoking, at
age 17, at college. It was 18
years later that I summoned the
courage to ;quit. And felt better
right away.
Yet a father should have bet-
ter judgment than to administer
corporal punishment to a girl 14;
and in front of her friends , no

DEAR DORIS.
- Yoti have given m e much to
'thin-about-Fend -theincentive to
do something constructive with-
my life.
It does take courage to fol-
low through on a t•break"; how-
ever, i consider this marriage
dead, and no longer love my
abusive husband.
I am going to seek an inter-
view with the family counselling
agency here which you recom-
mended. Thank you, Doris, for
your unbiased help. I hope that
I do become one of those fortunate
women who have been able to
obtain a separation from an un-
happy marriage.
- - NEW HOPE
DEAR NEW HOPE - If anything
I said gave you the gumption to
-follow through on what you and
I kno'w is the :very best solution,
I too am grateful.
I'd turn things inside out to
help a misguided couple to make
a go of marriage',' but there are
times •when nothing but separat-
ion • can save mental balance.

This latter film, Heath noted,

In a brief report to council,

DEAR DORIS
I am keeping company with .

has only one °suit, which fits him
poorly. I am ashamed to go out.

T "this: tell him-you. want
to have his picture taken with
you or for you. For such an'
important occasion, you want him
to look his' very best; hair cut,
shoes shined, suit cleaned and
pressed. You Might even suggest
that he have a clean shirt to put
on at the last moment.
If you do this gently and
because you are fond of him, he
may get a brand new respect
for himself. Take one step at
