There are '750,000 people of Amerindian (the original inhab- itants), East Indian, African, Portuguese, Chinese, other Eur- opean background. Most of the Guyana Coastland is below sea level and is cultivated by a sys- tem of canals and sluices which hold back the salt water and let in the fresh water from creeks and streams. The major part of the population live on the Coast. The main crops of Guyana are rice, sugar cane, coconuts, bananas, pla ntains, and other tropical growth. The main natural resource of the country is baux- ite from which aluminum is made. When the, East Indians came from .India they brought Hinduism and Mohammedanism along with these religions. Christianity in many denominations is present among the people. Perhaps one of the biggest needs of Guyana is to make sure that all its youth have the means whereby they can take advantage of the Guyanese .._eclugalional system.
