powered Lola.
Stewart went to the lead on the ninth, lap but trans-
mission problems on the '18th lap of the 80 lap race forced
him out. From there on it was Team-McLaren all the
way. Denis Hume finished first (200 miles in one hour,
48 minutes) and Peter Revson second (only 9;10 of a
second behind Hume). Both drove the 1971 McLarens.
Third and fourth went to last year's McLarens entered
by the Motchenbacher Racing :Team of ,California, John
Cordts, the first Canadian to finish, placed fifth, also
elder McLaren._ .
Keep your eye on the daily papers ,for the rest of the
CAN-AM events and see if you don't get the urge to join
us next year. If you can't wait, come along to Mosport
for the Grand prix of Canada in September. We'll be

Area Schedules
The Sports Column HIEBERT MIDGET GIRL'S GAMES
One of the fattest growing spectator sports in the
country is automobile racing and events at Mosport-Park-
over the week end prove that many pectple from Seaforth
are among those bitten by the bug.
I was there along with my brother Bruce and pat
Brown(formerly of Dublin) Aned us with his wife.
' Coincidence runs high at these events and the week
end was no exception. In an area of 500 acres packed
with over 40,000 spectators, who should be camped only
two tents away but another contingent of afficionados
from the area. Jack Durst, Harold Smith and Keith
Finnigan, all of Egrfiondville, were there with Ron Eyre,
a former village resident now living in Guelph.
The event was the first race in the 1971 CAN-AM
challenge cup series for group seven cars.
For the uninitiated the CAN-AM is the richest series
of road races in the world with well over $1,000,000
being awarded in prize money. It is held annually On
road circuits throughtout Canada and the United States.
Group seven cars are the fastest racing machines in
the world, with an unlimited engine, • size. Most,i9owever,
use specially prepared 494 cu inch Chevrolet V"B's
though others are used. One of the most interesting of
these was a 4 litre V-12 Ferrari which took'part in the
race on Sunday.
CAN-AM races are, understandably, among the most
exciting anywhere with cars reaching speeds of 180 m,p.h,
plus on a track which is like a winding section of any
highway, not a carefully prepared banked oval like Indy
or a straight line course like the many drag strips.
The race could have been extremely exciting, with
• Team McLaren, the perennial winners since the" start
of the event in 1966 facing their stiffest challenge yet
from Scotsman Jackie Stewart driving a new •chev.

ing chances came 'when Brian

centre but ,had trouble controlling
a high ball with Forbes making
the save and again when Ken
McCliire fired a shot from, close
in but the ball went over the
net.
St. Columban goalie Paul O'-
Reilly made two fine saves near
the end of the half to keep the

In the 2nd half: Tillsonburg
pressed to the attack and had
many good chances but the , St. „
Columban defenders with goalie

sulting corner-kick, Torn Love
curved a shot into the Tillson-
