When it's time to remodel the
kitchen then it's time to,, call a
family conference'.
Naturally everybody has a real
• interest in the kitchen, the source
of all that good food. But family
concern for the 'kitchen goes
beyond this basic.
A well-planned kitchen is a
room the whole family can use,
So it's wise. to get opinions at the
outset.

another point. The kitchen should

Fires•
Can Be
Problem
As summer begins, so does
the grass fire season with its
destruction of organic, agricul-
tural matter.
K. E. Best, Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture and Food ,
Agricultural Representative for
Haldimand County, says
foresters have several guide-
lines to helif farmers prevent
grass fires.
All farmers should check with
local township offices to learn
the by-laws for controlling the
setting of fires, and should always
notify the local fire department
before starting a burning operat-
ion.
Fires should be started when
the wind is calm, when there is
plenty of manpower available, in
case the fire should get out of
hand, and when tools such as
shovels, brboms, and water pails
are close by for quick use.
Tractors and plows should
be kept' in readiness. 'These are
the best tools for controlling a
grass fire on arable land, as ,
they can plow around an affected
area and prevent the fire
spreading.,
All fires should be burnt in
small sections , one at a time,
and it is important to know Where
immediate help can be obtained
if they should spread too qiickly.

Thinking of selling your
home? Or are yoti considering
making it • a bit more modern,
to keep up with the market - just
in case?
If you're thinking alohg either
line, here are five .steps you
can take to increase the value
of your home, as suggested by
the Edison Electric Institute.
Each represents a moderate in-
vestment which will raise= the
value of a house by more.than
the cost of the improiement.
1. A good' coat of paint in a
carefully selected color will have
--fts cost reliff-lieeTrfIlly
over,. especially if you're a do-
it-your-selfer who can save ap-
plication costs. New paint will
bring freshness and desirability
to even an older house. Your
local paint dealer will help you
in selecting the type of paint' and
the best...color for your home.
2. - A thousand dollars or

tential buyer Is always..impres-
sed by a well lighted, well plan-
ned game room or family room -
especially after looking at other
homes where a basement is just
a basem ant.
Don't overlook the possibility
of transforming that basement
area into bedrooms. With a
simple conversion to nameless;

ing furnace with its fuel supply

space.
Again, your local building
supply dealer will be happy to
advise you on materials arid
methods for building the roams,
and your electrical contractor or-
electric com,)any will have
full details on the conversion to
nameless electric heat.
3. - Bathroom fixtures date
a house quickly. They canbe re-
placed singly for a reasonable
amount if they are old-fashioned'
or damaged. Often, a new set
of faucets will update an entire
bathroom.
4. - If you have a carport,
you can change it into a garage
for a moderate amount. All it
takes is the addition of garage
doors, a bit of electric wiring
and the closing in of opeh sides.
Check with your supplier here,
too, for material's and ideas.
5. - One of. the quickest and.
surest ways Of Updating. your
house is 'by the installation of
nameless electric heat. A
small,' ' compact flameless
electric furnace or boiler de-
signed to hook right into yo.uj;,..
existing' -warm air ductwork or
hot water piping can Often be
installed in a matter of hours.
Or, if you plan a remodeling
job or the addition of a new
room, baseboard or radiant
ceiling heat can be installed to
give you. the added advantage of
individual ,heat control in each
room. -
Flameless electric heat burns
no fuel, and needs no storage or
piping. It 'is clean and odorless.
Becau§e electricity is still one
of the best bargains available to-
day, a flameless electric' heat-
ing system is also economical to
install.and operate.
Small investments, such as
flameless' ,electric heating, often
pay large dividends in the In-
creased value of your home. They
also .can make your home so
comfortable and attractive to you,
you might change your mind about
selling, alter all!
It's clean-up time inSeaforth.
Big dividends from small
investments can be guaranteed
when all that is involved is the
investment 'of a little time in
cleaning up and fixing up. Sea-
forth Chamber of Commerce,
in co-operation with the Town
of Seaforth council, is again
sponsoring Seaforth's Cleap;Up,
Paint-Up program.
In past years the campaign
has produced definite results,
and that is why the Chamber of
Commerce pushes its annual
spring campaign to tidy up Sea-
forth.
No matter how good'a house-
keeper you may be, there will
be corners that require clean-
ing, untidy areas that should be
raked and seeded, or perhaps an
unsightly pile of trash that should
go to the dump. It is to draw
emphasis to just such tasks that
the spring clean-up is held.
TRUCKS'AVAILABLE
Again this year the town is
providing a truck with which .to
pick up winter's accumulated
trash.' Arrangements for the
pick-up service have been worked
out with Reeve John Flannery and
the public works .committee of
council.
There just is no doubt about
such a campaign paying
dividends, . the Chamber of

Tanks
If the septic tank needs clean-.
ing, do it now before the „frost
comes next fall, advises
Professor tt. W. Irwin, Ontario
Agricultural College.
"Most' septic tariks.,fall, and
have to lie "replaced, simply be-,
cause they haven't been cleaned
in time," this agricultural en-
gineer explains, "and this fre-
quently means replacing the
seepage bed."
As a rule of thumb, a septic
tank' should be cleaned when the
sludge of the bottom plus the
scum on top equals one-third of
this liquid depth. which is abo
every three to five years.Lightecl
matches should not be used while
making the, check; gas'es form in
septic tanks and may explode.

thrill of working together for
a common goal, and youpill have
increased enjoyment from living
in clean, attractive surroundings!'
YEAR-LONG TASK
In urging full co-operation
so that the campaign would pro-
duce maximum benefits the
Chamber of Commerce pointed
out that Clean-Up, Fix-Up, Paint-
Up is not just a one-week pro-
gram, but a guide for better
civic living throughout '" the
entire year.
"The futhre of our town is
dependent on the traits shown
during our Clean-Up campaign,
namely, energetic interest.
"Throughdemonstrations of
these qualities in the next few
weeks we should set a pattern for
the rest of the year. The results
we accomplish and the habits^ of
cleanliness and beauty which we
acquire will persuade tourists
may be a kitchen that doubles as a
family room. The family rocAn- •
kitchen is a favorite in many new.
homes, and it's often possible to
create -such a setting In an older
homd.
A desk-study area, which
Mom 'can use for household plari;
ning and the youngsters for home-
work, is another.possibility. Even
the smallest kitchen should have
room for a bulletin board and
message center:-
An informal dining area con-
tinues to be one of the most popul-
ar kitchen additions. In the
smaller kitchen, the choice could
be a breakfast bar.
Some extra attractions of the
%itchen come from modern ap-
.
pliances - for instance, a range
with its own hot water tap or a
refrigerator-freezer With an
exterior dispenser for chilled
water or ice, cubes.
To create the custom look,
there are a variety of wall ovens
and cooktop units. And a new
dishwasher comes with a dec-
orator front.
At this point, the family con-
ference should probably adjourn
in search of information from
dealers in appliances and build-
ing products.
Such information can be a
guide , to. 'final decisions,
budgeting and the 'distribution of
work - what is to be profes-
sionally dorie and what can be
do-it-yourself. '
