FRIDAY, MAY 21
St. Columban dropped a close
game when they were defeated
4 - 2 by F.A.G. Stratford in a
London & District Soccer League
1st Division game played inStrat-
ford on Saturday.
St. Columban suffered another
loss early in the 2nd half when
half-back Ken Coyne was in col-
lision with two Stratford players
and received an injury which was
diagnosed as a cracked bone "in
his leg. He was removed to
Stratford General Hospital where
his leg was placed in a cast.
St. Columba.n opened the scor-
ing in the first half when Gerald
Ryan broke down the left wing
and centred a perfect pass which
Brian Melady picked up and he
fired a hard shot into the bottom
left side of the Stratford net.
Stratford tied the score ten
minutes later when they broke in
on the left wing and scored from
the St. Columban goal mouth.
' Tom Love gave St. Columban
a 2 - 1 lead near the end of the
half when he out-guessed the
Stratford goalie and two fullbacks
with'a diving shot that never left
the ground.
In the 2nd half, Stratford
played with the very strong wind
in their favour and pressed to
the attack, tying the score in
the first five minutes when the
ball was rifled into the top right
corner of the St. Columban net
from just' outside the 18 yard
Juniors Win
First Game
St. Columban have entered
a team in the Stratford Indus-
trial League this year. Some of
the members of the team played
with Dublin in the same league
last year. •
The team includes Greg,
Gerry and Dave O'Reilly, Danny,
Tom, .Joe, Neil and Jim Murray,
Frank and Martin Verberne,
Larry, Marvin and Kevin Kale,
Gerry Staples, Tom Ryan, Glen
McLaughlin, Tom Burke, Neil
Beuerrnamt, Douglas O'Reilly,
Brad Finlayson and Larry Coyne.
They are under—the direction
of Ron O'Connor, ' the team's ,
coach. Although the team has
twenty-one players, they can only
dress fifteen so some of , the
boys have to sit it out. Coach
O'Connor says that in the sum-
mer when .some of the older
members get jobs the extra play-
ers will get a fair chance.
The team played its first
game Monday on the Seaforth
High School field. The St. Col-
umban team were the winners
and were victorious over Strat-
ford F.A.G..•bY a score of 7
to 1. The" team was led by

goals" assisted by Tom Ryan on
three occasions and by Kevin
Kale on the fourth. The remain-
ing goals were scored by Larry
Kale and' were assisted. by Tom
Ryan twice and Neil Murray on
the third and final' goal.,

Ceptral High School field.

shot into the top right corner of
• the St. Columban net to flake
the final score.

The St. Columban back field
was under constant pressure but
the score remained 2 - 2 until
mid-way through the half when
Stratford scored from a wild
scramble in the St, Columban
goal mouth.
St. Columban started the
game with only one alternate
player and when Ken Coyne was
injured, were forced to play the
remainder of the game with no
substitutes.
After Stratford went ahead
