Trade-in Value Enhanced While the

By MICHAEL KELLY

Spending -a little money on proper car maintenance actu-
ally can save you money in the long run.
Sound confusing? Actually it isn't, and here's why.
If you have bought a shiny new car, naturally you want to
keep it in proper shape, not only because it is -Safer to drive,
but, because eventually, if you're like Most people, you will
want to trade it in.
A well maintained car, according to both new and used car
dealers, is worth more at trade-in time than a car which has
not been properly maintained. In many cases the difference-
can be 'as much as several hundred dollars,
"We love to see a car that's in good shape both inside and
outside, and esp ecially maintained well under the hood," said
one new car dealer. "We give top dollar in trade-on those ears
andolye just don't get enough of them."
There's(' another good reason to kee a car rn
properly, and that's the warranty which came with your
new car.
Whileg-the provisions of warranties are different for each
'of the Major auto companies, and may vary from year to
year, all of them require peri- But if you haven't taken the Odic maintenance to keep the proper steps to keep the war- warranty in effect, ranty up to date, you will

of the.varioum parts of the en-
gine, such as the cooling sys-
tem, generator, brakes and
steering.
A modern car is composed
of many complicated parts,
any of which-might go wrong
at any time. It just makes
good sense to have things in-
spected, and minor work per-
formed at regular intervals.
Tune-I'p Important
A smart motorist also gets
an .'engine tune-up which•
includes new distributor
points, spark, plugs and con-
-denser, at regular intervals.
Generally this interval is'
about every 10,000 miles.
Tires should be h

Proper. Ttre Care
Add an extra three or four
pounds of pressure to cold
tires prior to long trips where
you anticipate driving at
sustained high speeds. * 0,

in a week or less, when the
others remain the same,
should be removed ,and in-
spected.
Carry a spare tire that is
properly inflated and in good
condition.

Winch 'Your Warrant?.
This means that if some-
thing major goes wrong with
your.. Car and is covered by
warranty, you don't have to
pay for replacement of it.
Proper tire inflation is es-
sential. Underinflation causes
,extreme, sidewall flexing,
builds up excessive heat, and
causes rapid wear on the tire
tread's outer edges.
Overinflation causes tires
to run hard, subjects them to
damage and weakening .of
'.the 'carcass, and causes ex-
, cessive wear in the middle of
.the tread.
Check your owner's man,:
ual for recommended tire
pressure.

when they put on or take/off
snow tires.
Incidentally we probably
won't have any more snow
until late this fall, so if you've
still got snow tires on the
wheels, it's a good idea to
take them off now.
Keeping the outside of the
car clean also is a good idea.
In weather like this many
people prefer to wash, and
wax when necessary, them-
selves. Others prefer to use
the services of. a car wash.

CAR PICTURES

it is best to• shoot through
