144HE HURON EXPOSIToR, SEAFORTH, ONT.,, APRIL 1. i971 Railway Denies Action
To Eliminate Facilities
Denying suggestions that
CNR rail facilities were not being
eliminated in a wholesale manner
Canadian National Railway offi-
cials, defending CN's actions in
reducing or eliminating rail
service In unprofitable areas,
told the Midwestern Ontario Re:
gional Development Council
Thursday that such facilities
would remain in most areas
available for future use.
The MORDC members invited
the railway officials to the ses-
sion to discuss future railway
policy as it may affect a,regional
development plan.
David Kilberg of Listowel,
council president, said he thought
CN was acting too fast in cut-,
ting service withput waititig to
see the effects of over-aB
regional planning, and future
regional government.
"We have no immediate
plans to demolish or abandon
facilities," said R. V. Doty of
Toronto, CN's industrial devel-
opment department manager.
He said changes in service were
related to traffic arid "we do
have some plans to improve ser-
vices."
"people have to want to use
what you've got," said R. M.
Veenis of London, manager of
the Southwestern Ontario
division.
The four-county MORDC re-
gion (Huron, Perth, Wat erloo
and Wellington) has more miles
of railway per population, or
a pf land, than any other area L
in Ontario, said W. G. Pearce,
CN technical resource officer.
Snow Costs Up
$18,000 In '71
An "extra severe winter" in
Huron County has put the roads
department in a bind.
In fact, the road committee
has found it necessary to apply
to the Minister of Highways for
additional money.
"If we don't get it," said
road committee chairman, Joe
Hoffman, ',something will have
to be deleted from our budget".
Huron County engineer Jim
Britnell said Huron has had about
140 inched of snow this past
winter. In 1969, snow removal
costs were .$83,000; in 1970,
$87,000; and in 1971, $105,000.

TRUST COMPANY SINCE 1800
A resolution from the County
of Perth advocating the restric-
tion on the importing of "cheap
beef", from Australia and Nev
Zealand into Canada did not get
the • support of Huron County
Council!
At the March session ,last
Friday, William Elston, reeve
of Morris Township, claimed
this import-expert business was
a "two-way street". .
He said'Canada's pork exports
we're a "God-send" to ftarmers
who sell 40 percent of their hogs
outside Canada.
„ beef . imArts from
Australia and New Zealand' are
not hurting our markets one bit,”
stated Reeve Elston. "In fact,
Beef Aid
everything points to 'a stronger
market. If you cut off these
imports, you will be pricing beef
right out of the poor man's
reach."
Reeve • Elgin Thompson,
' Tucker-smith, concurred. -
"We've never had it so good,"
said Reeve Thompson.
