New postal Cade
Ottawa.
Sometimes the postal CODE
will indicate a single building,
if it is a large apartment or
office building containing many
individual units. Or it can in-
dicate a single organization or
company, if it receives a large
volume of mail from the Post
Office regularly.
But in urban areas it never,
indicates an area larger than tmef
side of a city block. So it en-
ables the Post Office to program
its machines to sort mail right
down to' very small sections of
the city.
The CODE has been designed
for a minimum life span of 30
years, but Mr. Cote says it will
'last much longer than that, It
is flexible enough to accommod-
ate growth and shifts in populat-
ion,
And once your residence gets
its CODE, it becomes a perina-
nent part of your address. It
will never change, although if you
move to another residence, you
will inherit a pew CODE.
To ensure 'that the postal
CODE is effectively impieTnented ,
across Canada, the Post Office Is
spending some $60 to $70 million
on equipment over the next five
years, in the fifteen cities which
account f6r 85% of all mail in •
Canada --- Halifax
'
Quebec City,
Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa,
Hamilton, London, Windsor, Win-
nipeg, Regina, Saskatoon,
Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver
and Victoria.
Any uncoded mail, M Cote
warns, will naturally
through the machines d w 1
have to be sorted by hand."

KENNEDY - SALLOWS
A reception Was held at the
home of.the bride's mother.
Previous to the 'wedding the
bride was honoured with showers
by Mrs. -Edmund valkus and Miss
Joan Muir.
Canadians will get their first
close look at the postal CODE
this AptirlSt r,starting inOttawa.
Jean-Pierre Cote, Minister
responsible for the Post Office,
announced the launch date at a
press conference today in the
nation's capital.
The CODE will be a perman:-
ent part of every Canadian ad-
dress by early 1974. It will be
introduced in Manitoba in the
fall of Shie year, followed by
Saskatchewan in the Spring of
1972, the Atlantic provinces in
the fall, Alberta at the end of
--that \year, British Columbia, the,
Yukon and the Northwest Ter-
ritories in the Spring of 1973, and
Quebec and the rest of Ontario
early in 1974.
"The CODE is essential,"
Mr. Cote said, °in order to
allow us to handle efficiently the
spiralling mail volumes and in-
creased -traffic-congestion in the
country'S -larger poit-offices." "
The CODE is alph-numeric
-- composed 'of both letters and
numbers-- and always -takes the
form of ANA NAN, where "A"
represents a' letter of the alpha-
bet and "N" a number from 0
to 9. There is a space between
the first three acid the last three
characters.
A typfcal example is K2P OB6.
The CODE, contains enough
information to determine aper-
son's address right down tone
side of a city street between
intersections, and Sometimes
even further. The above example,
K2P OB6, indicates the south side
of Nepean Street between Bank,
and O'Connor in downtown
