Most of these are • widows or widowers, not qinte ready to give up independence. They are the ones who heat up a can of soup at mealtime, or live on cold cereals, as it isn't worthwhile cooking for one. They spend countless hours by them- selves, especially in the cold winter months. They are the ones who would welcome a visitor with open arms. Our group is forming a Friendship Club, with each member adopting a lonely person, just to be • regular visitor. S - FOR FRIENDSHIP'S SAKE DEAR FRIENDSHIP - Fine! Volunteers who have a Meals-On- Wheels project repOrt that re- cipients, dress up special to receive the meal - and the deliverer. Want to sit and cnat with her. 0 • Let's keep the lonely ones in mind - and do something about them. DEAR DORIS - My fiancee and I have one big problem: his parents. They disapprove of me because I'm not • theii nationality. They'd do any- thing' to break us up. His Dad is trying to keep John home be- cause he knows he wants to farm. I want him to leave when we get married, 'and he agrees to, but his Dad always brings up some- thing to keep him there. Do you think I'm being greedy by asking him to leave his parents and start 'a fresh life for us both? - READY TO MARRY - BUT • Huron Pork Producers -Re-elect Jim McGregor families in some localities have offered 'to help with beverages - a,,..i.arx1,,,thoirli,e_lo,hasjagen accepted. Probably the best way is to 'abide by the 'custom which has sprung up wherever you happen to be. The bride's parents have a big bill to foot in any case, and that's for sure. - CONFIDENTIAL TO SHAKING - My psychiatric consultant suggests your tendency to shake is more likely to be from an emotional cause, rather than physical. You ought to be getting psy- chiatric help, which would probably involve two kinds of treatment: (1) A tranquilizer, which' would help you lose the tensions which cause the'shaking. (2) Repeated therapeutic in- terviews ,in which you would be helped to air those frustrations and pockets of hurt and anger which have been buried in 'your subconscious, and which keep you from being a serene person. Although economic loss from the disease was very limited in On- tario, the disease was identified in most areas of the •province. Damage was far more severe in the United States, especially in the more southerly corn growing areas. In 1970, the Race T of southern leif ' blight waa.,particularly severe in hybrids carrying Texas male-sterile cytoplasm, and ex- tfemely mild on corn with normal cytoplasm. The majority of the hybrid seed available for 1971 _ Contain_ To'xas_ male- s ter-11e- cytoplasm which is used widely •• because it eliminates 'the' need for hand detasseling in hybrid seed'cOrn production. Seed corn sold for 1971 will be ,tagged to indicate whether the - cytoplasm it contains is Normal, Texas male-sterile or a Blend_ of both. Seed with normal cyto- plasm should be tolerant to the new Race T of southern leaf blight. Whether the disease will ,be a problem in Ontario in 1971 can not be 'determined. Weather con- ditions could lead to a problem. By 1.972 almost all seed corn sold in Ontari o should contain normal cytoplasm and be tolerant to the new disease.
