HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1971-03-25, Page 15This year's national "Timmy", 11 year old Denis Lapalme of Timmins, eagerly reviews
his busy schedule of events for this year's Easter Seal Campaign while collecting autographs
from Calgary Stampeder Wayne1 Harris, divines Beverly Boys and racing's Sandy Hawley.
Three years ago Denis lost both legs in a train mishap and was later fitted with two patella
tendon bearing artificial legs at the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre in Toronto. Despite
this double handicap, Denis is still a keen skater and plays hockey regularly with a local
Timmins house league.
The campaign in the Seaforth area is being carried on by the Seaforth Lions Club. Committee
chairman, E.S. Clair Campbell, said at least $500 additional gifts were required if the Seaforth
quota is to be met.

Imagine what it would be like
for an eight year old boy to lose
both legs below the knee in a
train accident. With all _Ithe
youthful' Wonders of the world
still ah-ead-of -him-,•-it -would -seem-
impossible to expect anything
approaching a normal boyhood,
Yet, three years later, eleVen
year old Denis Lapalme of Tim-
mins, Ontario, who runs, plays
hockey, football and baseball, is
the 19'11 national "Timmy" for
WS. — year's Easter -Seal-
Campaign. In his new' role as
Timmy, Denis hopes that his
efforts on behalf of thousands of
handicapped youngsters will en-
courage everyone to support the
Ontario Society for Crippled
Children in • its appeal for
•$t;550';900 during the official
month long campaign of March 11
to April 11.
The objective in.Seaforth is
$2,000 according to Clair Camp-
bell, who heads the Seaforth Lions
Club committee sponsoring the
-area campaign.
Denis is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Orval Lapalme and has
three brothers and two sisters,
Completely •bilingual, he is a
Grade 7 student at St. Gerrard
School and his favourite subject
is mathematics. One day Denis
-hopes-to• -be a teacher.- Although
his interests include skating,
music, reading and baseball, his
chief love is hockey. Incredible
as it seems, he plays centre and_
right wing on the Atom League,
Timmins Moose team. He roots
for the Boston Bruins and his
idol, __is. .Bobby Orr, whom he
frankly ,hero worships.
How did all this come about in
three short years? Through the
Ontario Society for Crippled
Children -- the organization
whose chief objective is the-find-
ing and caring for every needy,
physically handicapped Child in.
Ontario under 19 years of age;
helping them to achieve their
maximum potential. •
Everyone has heard of the
Society's Eastei Seal Campaign
but a large segment of the people
in this, province know very little
abOut, the Society itself.. It all
started in 1922, when ten Rotary
Clubs in south-western Ontario
serving crippled children in their
own area decided to unite their
effprts and extend their services
as far as possible. As a result,
many -other "se rvice-clubssuch_as____
Lions, Kiwanis, Kinsmen, etc.
joined in the project -- and, to-
day, more than 230 clubs
are combining . their efforts, to,
care for 14,500 crippled children
in Ontario.
Working out of .21 'District
Offices, the Societyha;-.public
-health nuiSeS 'provide conSulting---
nursing services to families of
crippled children and assist in
organizing annual diagnostic and
consultant clinics requested by
local medical societies. Inaddit-
ion to obtaining the services of
these consultants, through its
service clubs the Society prd-
vides the necessary transpor-
tation and accommndation.
Almost 2000 children a year are
examined at these clinics, and
recommendatiOns are made as to
the treatment needed and, if
necessary,' at which centre they
could best receive it.
