Zeroallilage Corn Saves Time
lage retains some of the time
and laborsaving p.dvantages of
zero 'tillage while removing
some of the yield risks pre-
sently associated with the
latter on heavier soils.
For the farmer who prefers
to cdlitinue planting his corn
conventionally, the purchase of
a zero-till planter can serve as
insurance against the occasional
wet fall or late spring. In such
situations, part or all of the
next crop may be zero-till planted
to avoid the yield reduction which
could otherwise result from a
sizable delay in planting date. In
other years, the crop can be
conventionally planted with the
same planter.
Approximately five thousand
acres of corn were zero-till
planted in Ontario in 1970. In-
dications are that this acreage
will be up In 1971.

'relative to the situation with
contiguous conventional corn,
but research data in support
of this statement are--very
limited.
(6) A suitably designed corn
planter is normally required
to obtain satisfactory plant
establishment with zero til-
lage. The most common
zero-till planter in Ontario
' has been the Allis-Chalmers-
"no-till?' pianter. However,
comparable planters are
being developed by other
manufacturers and will be
available in the .near future.
('7) Zero-till planters Will plant
in conventionally-tilled soil
or in land which has received
limited tillage. Thus, a
zero-till planter can be
combined with a system 'of
reduced tillage such asi)low-
log and/or disking once before
planting. Such•min(mum tit-

Ontario farmers have recog-
nized for some time that they have
potentially much to gain from a
system which will eliminate
much, or all of the tillage
currently used in corn production.
Because of our short growing
season, the time required for fall
plowing, and for spring cUltivat--
ion and planting, is limited. One
solution to this time limitation
has, been the use of large and
expensive equipment with the
capacity to plow and cultivate
more acres per hour. Another
solution is a reduction in, or the
elimination of, present preplant
tillage operations.
Research on zero tillage has.
been conducted for a number of
years at several locations across
Ontario. Results of this research
have generally revealed the
following:
(I) The yield of zero-till corn
compared to its convention-
ally-planted counterpart is
dependent upon soil type. On
lighter, and drought-
susceptible' soils, zero-till
corn has usually equalled the
yield of conventional corn and
occasionally surpassed it. On
heavier soils, such as clay, a
yield reduction has often been
associated with zero tillage.
While intensive research is
presently being conducted In
the province in an attempt to
overcome this possible yield
disadvantage, reasons tor the
problem and solutions to it
remain, at present, poorly
Understobd.
(2)ero tillage reduces or ellm-
1 ates erosion losses with
corn on sloping land. Zero-,
till corn', tithn, can be grown
on rolling land otherwise
unsuitable for corn produc-'
tion.
(3) proper herbicide use IS essen-
tial with. zero' tillage since
postpianting cultivation is
usually impossible,
tional ,herbicides, except ore-
plant-incorporated types, can
be used successfully with
zero-till corn. Spraying for
perennial weed control should
be carefully done to avoid
strips in the first year.
(4) Fertilization does not appear
to be a major problem with
zero tillage. Phosphorus and
potassium, requirements can
be surface-applied in the fall
or early spring, .Or partially
Applied. with the planter. Nit-
rogen can be knifed in or
broadcast-applied; as with •
conventional corn. • in
the spring.
(5), Corn borer and . leaf blight
may become more damag-
ing after several years of
colatinuoUS
