' a full feed of corn silage plus supplemental protein. The aver- age of two years' research. (1968-69) in minnesota has shown that Holstein steers gained 2.2 pounds per head per day. This gain required 1,822 pounds of corn silage per 100 pounds of gain. Daily gain was increased to 2.6 pounds when shelled corn was added to the ration at an average daily level of 6 pounds. When a high hay rution -was fed from 400 to 750 pounds, then followed by a high concentrate finishing ration to 1,020 pounds, average daily gain was increased to 2.7 pounds. However, this increased the feed costs per 100 pounds of gain. Suitable rations for carrying Holstein steers from, 400 to Maws, Underwood, Frs..Laragh 700 pounds might be as l'ollows: (1) a full feed, of corn silage, 1 to 2 pounds of protein sup- plement, and 0 to 3 pounds of grain (barley or corn), de= pending on desired gain (2) full feed of mixed hay, „ 2 to 4 pounds of grain, and 1 pound of protein supple- ment, unless the hay is of excellent quality, i.e. early cut and at least one-third legume • (3) any combination of hay, to Dr. Whitman, and the Candian • haylage, or corn silage, plus Legion, while I was a patient in , limited, grain (2 to 5 pounds) the 'hospital. - Earl W. They carry less external fat and tend to have less marbling fat. Also, they grade lower with average grades being standard. On the_ether hand, Holstein steers do yield a higher percent of,their carcass weight in boneless trim- med retail cuts. In terms of crittability, Holsteins have been ranked over Herefords, Angus, and Shorthorns, in descending order. All four breeds nave been ranked equal on a tenderness rat- ing. While Holsteins carry less fat cover, it la not necessary to slaughter at heavy weights in order to have good finish. Selling on the rail ba.sis rather than on • the live basis tends to reduce buyer discrimination. Optimum slaughter weight for Holsteins on high roughage rations has been suggested at 1,200 pounds. on high grain rations, it has been observed that 1,000 pounds is optimum. N E W 1965 Chev.
