down Black's Point road, it

The Scott house was hauled
,;from the Egmondville area in
. October, 1969, as noted in the
Expositor at the time.Hauled
twenty-odd-miles on a platform
truck by the Parsons firm of ,„
Staffa, it cost John Hindmarsh,,,
of Goderich township, the . pur-
chaser, $30 a day for three
_days. Such a feat was possible
because the. foundation logs,
mostly 20 inches square, were
so sound that the house could be
lifted, jacked, and set On the
new site without tearing the logs
apart, as is usual- in such
removals.
There is.one other house in
the dietriCt which is to be trucked
without taking apart. This)one
is going to Hamilton, of all
places. It stands on the west
side of Highway • 23, on the
boundary between the town of
Mitchell and Fullartontownship. '
Mrs. Kenneth Martin, . of
Hamilton, .purchased it ,from
'Dalton Fischer, and it was
intended to travel by truck, but
the movement has been peitponed

the timber used by the settl.drs
was that which was near at hand;
beech, bard maple, butter*,
cherry and in this area very
often cedar. Sometimes theround
logs were used, sometimes
squared timber. Although sweet

that wood was available when
Lucius Carey, from GuerriseY,
built about 1852 his log house .

cession Vl, Colborne. Taken
apart and re-erected in the
Black's Point area three years
ago by . Jack Ladd, Gpderich
barber. He and his wife have
put a great deal of work into
this attractive house, installing
appropriate antiques and start-
ing construction of a fireplace.
In the same Black's Point
area is a pile of logs -which
represent a . former house at St.
Columban, aid in due time will

of Windsor.' The timbers are
rock elm and basswood. The,
house, 38 by. 40, was built, sohie

Stanley Youngblut,. ' Farm
Credit manager at' Goderich,
hankered for a log cottage for
several years; thenthe opportun-
ity came to acquire a pioneer
home in, the St. Joseph area:
Measuring 24 by 28 feet, it stood
on slot 16, Concession X111, Hay
Township, and probably was-built
by Henry W. Durstein about 1862.
Bottom lags and those in the'
main floor, are cedari• hemlock
was used in the top. Mr. Young-
blut is building a fireplace.
Not all log houses look the
part.. Everett U. Mcllwain, reeve
of Goderich township, lives in
a big one in Con, IV, but it has
long been covered with siding.
It was probably built in the 1840s
for Sam 1VIcAlath. There are two
very old McIlwain log houses, one
on Lot .16, Con. 11, Goderich
township, for home years owned
by Stanley Prevett, Goderich,
and now 'by Dr. Michael Cordon,
medical superintendent of
Goderich Psychiatrie
He came here from England, and
his ancestors never lived in a
log house, but he and his family
“just love" this one. Dr. Conlon
has built a swimming pool, and.
a sizable lake for swans.
However numerous and sub-
stantial, the- log houses are not
going to ameliorate the housing
shortage. Their :owners enjoy
them at week epds, in vacation,
perhaps all summer, but there
does not appear to be - one•
permanently occupied. The
telephone • directory lists a'
number ler 'N.A.McHolm, whose
cottage is on HighwaY 21. south of
Goderich, but it is discontinued
fQr the winter. William Wheeler,
just north of the McHolm place,
has three log houses, one for
his wife, one which serves as%
a workshop for himself, an&the
-big one as residence- -hence, His,
Hers and Ours. In “Ours"
there is a telephone, but the
Wheelers are away south for
the winter. There is a television
set, but it is concealed in a •
cabinet, so as not to upset the
fitness of things in a house
furnished with antiques.
It is probable that someone
will live year-round in tbe
former Scott house, a two-storey
building - with Hydro and a fur- ,
nace, and a roomy summer .

, situated, and only a few rods
from the sideroad. In view of
the cost &ready involved, the
next ownei' will be someone with
quite a lot of money.
