In his report, Huron County Treasurer Michael Blumhagen said at council’s Dec. 16 committee of the whole meeting that the working group will attempt to assess the overall financial impact that OMPF cuts in recent years have created in the area. The hope in creating a snapshot of the effect funding cuts are having to a community like Huron County is to eventually lobby the provincial government for change. Blumhagen indicated that budget impacts as a result of the working group would be about $10,000 for a municipal tax consultant – saying that the level of analysis necessary for such a study would not be manageable at a local level. The group held its first meeting on Dec. 17 and Blumhagen told councillors that he should be able to present some figures to them by the end of January. *** Since 2009, Huron County has spent nearly $180,000 on its viticulture program – examining the potential of turning Huron County into a wine-producing region. In a report requested by Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan, Huron County Treasurer Michael Blumhagen laid out the numbers for councillors, saying that $173,568 had been spent to date in comparison to $148,750 in total funding. The report was provided for councillors’ information. *** Huron County Council has authorized the formation of a Finance Policy Committee that will review and develop policies on multi-year budgetting and budget approval authority. The committee will consist of Treasurer Michael Blumhagen, Chief Administrative Officer Brenda Orchard, Warden Paul Gowing and four councillors. The councillors volunteered for their roles at the Dec. 16 meeting: Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn, Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan, North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent and Goderich Deputy-Mayor Jim Donnelly. *** South Huron Mayor Maureen Cole will serve as chair of Huron County Council’s committee of the whole day two meetings, after being nominated by her fellow councillors. Bluewater Deputy-Mayor Jim Ferguson will serve as vice-chair of committee of the whole day two meetings. *** After one year of work throughout the county, the Huron County Economic Development Board presented its first-ever annual report to council at its Dec. 16 committee of the whole meeting. The report states that in 2016, the board envisions many of its concepts being put into play, including some fundamental changes on how the county relates to the province, the country and the world as a relative marketplace. • Over 12 years experience handling grain • Striving to provide the best possible service for local growers 519-335-6813 / 519-291-7777 43269 Amberley Rd., 4 kms. west of Molesworth on Hwy. #86 from our family to yours With greetings and gratitude from all of us to all of you at this joyous time of year.
