MRES Grade 1A says Santa’s beard came with age
When The Citizen asked Mrs.
Shaw’s Grade 1A class at Maitland
River Elementary School about
Santa Claus and his iconic beard, a
lot of students attributed it to his age,
but it didn’t stop there.
“He’s pretty old. Some old people
have beards and he keeps his, but I
really don’t know why. I guess
it’s because he’s Santa and
he’s supposed to have it and
to like it and to make sure people
enjoy it.”
Max Addison
“Santa needs it so he can find stuff
in it. He can pick up dirt with it and
clean chimneys. He also uses it clean
his floor and his sled and to
keep the house clean so Mrs. Claus
is happy.”
Evan Becker
“Santa keeps his beard because
people shouldn’t see underneath it.
He could have bad skin under there
or something he wants to hide. He
does trim it, but it just keeps growing
because of all the cookies he eats.”
Laura Dawson
“Santa uses his beard to keep
warm so he doesn’t get cold. If he
didn’t have it, and a storm came up
when he was on his sled, he would
get really cold because there are no
doors or windows on the sled to keep
him warm. He needs the beard to
stay warm.”
Logan Donaldson
“I think Santa Claus keeps his
beard because he would look fake
without it and he keeps his magic
powers in it. Without his beard, the
reindeer couldn’t fly the sleigh and
he wouldn’t be able to get into
people’s houses.”
Gavin Elliott
“I think Santa grew his beard and
then didn’t want to cut it. Maybe he
used magic to put it there. I bet it
glows so he can walk through
people’s houses in the dark without
tripping over things. It probably
helps him see what’s in his
Christmas bag as well.”
Caleigh Grubb
“He will never get rid of his beard
because it matches the snow. That
lets him hide if people see him in the
winter. He made it like that, so he
only comes in the winter and his
beard can hide him if people see
him.”
Davey Hawkins
“Santa drinks a lot of milk on
Christmas. Like, a lot of milk. More
milk than most people drink in their
whole lives. All that milk makes his
beard grow and it makes it grow out
white as well.”
Abby McLaren
“I met Santa before when I was
going somewhere. I saw Mrs. Claus
and Santa and they were giving out
cookies. I got a cookie and so did my
whole family and Santa pulled them
out of his beard. That’s why he has a
beard, so he can hide cookies in it.
He also gave me a helicopter that
day for a present. He has to
have a beard so he looks like Santa
or else people might not take his
gifts.”
Lawerance McLellan
“I don’t know why Santa has a
beard. He has a white beard. He
keeps it because he likes having a
beard I guess. Who wouldn’t like
having a big beard like that?”
Tyson Miller
“Maybe he keeps his beard
because of all the sugar he has. The
sugar makes him grow a beard.
Maybe not though. Maybe it’s part
of his Christmas magic and because
it’s a Christmas colour.”
Seth Moffat
“Santa was born with a beard. He
doesn’t shave it off because he has
never had it off. He doesn’t know if
he can shave it off because it’s been
there forever.”
Lucas Oliver
“He’s Santa. I don’t know why he
grows it, but it keeps his chin warm
so that’s one reason for him to keep
it.”
Memphis Riley
“Maybe he got a beard because of
all the cookies he ate. Maybe eating
that many cookies makes you grow a
beard. It’s probably white because of
