Merry Christmas

Swiss Christmas about St. Nicholas, not Santa Claus

family,” she said. “We get together
with some good family friends in
Auburn for Christmas, which is a
tradition we’ve kept over the past 16
years. It’s important. They are
immigrants as well and we all have
similar experiences.”
Studhalter said the family tried to
adopt some other traditions like
Secret Santa, but it just didn’t
work out and they have kept
their Swiss traditions alive because
of that.
“We also have family in Quebec
that we visit with sometimes and
have some good friends that are very
important to us that we celebrate
Christmas with,” she said.
The Studhalter family farm, which
is home to both goats and pigs, also
plays prominently into activities on
Christmas, though not necessarily in
a celebratory way.
“Now that we have the goats, we
have chores that we all have to do,”
she said. “Christmas is kind of fit in
around the work on the farm.”
She said that when Christmas falls
on the weekend, it’s nice because
there are fewer chores that can be
done later in the day, however there
is still a lot of work to do.
“We still have to wean pigs if
that’s necessary and get all the
chores done,” she said. “There is a
lot less work, but there is still a lot to
do.”
Walton’s Duff’s United Church,
which closed this year, also played a
big part in Christmas celebrations
for the family, though not
necessarily for Studhalter.
“When Duff’s was open, some of
the family went there,” she said.
“My dad and I would usually stay
behind for the chores.”
For Studhalter, who started at
McGavin’s after graduation, she said
her celebration with friends has
become more and more prominent in
her Christmas time.
“Now it’s one of the best times to
see friends,” she said. “They try to
come home. Many have gone out
west looking for jobs. We get
together when they are home.”
She also has friends in the equine
community who have their own way
of celebrating Canada.
“I’m part of a big horse forum
online,” she said. “We do a Secret
Santa through it. It’s always fun to
slip something in the mail and know
that someone will enjoy it on the
other end. It’s also nice to get a cute
horse book from friends.”
This year, Studhalter received a
book from a friend in Maryland and
said she really enjoyed receiving the
gift.

The Grade 1C class at Maitland River Elementary School were able to brainstorm some ideas
recently about why Santa Claus maintains his lush lip and chin foliage. Back row, from left:

Mrs. Stapleton’s Grade 1C class at
Maitland River Elementary School
has some unique ideas about why
Santa Claus not only keeps his
beard, but keeps it so bushy
and white as well and they were
happy to share their ideas with The
Citizen.
“Santa has a beard because he has
to have it so his face is covered. It’s
white and bushy because he has to
have it a Christmas colour and it
would look silly red and green. If he
wears Christmas colours, he can
stand against walls on Christmas
night and disappear.”
Gavin Benninger
“Santa grew his old beard and kept
it because he is older. Pretty much all
old people have beards. If he shaved
it off, he wouldn’t look like Santa
and he would look too young.”
Chace Bester
“I don’t know why Santa has a
beard. He uses it to look like the real
Santa instead of the actors on
television or movies that just look
like Santa because of a fake beard.”
Cayden Beukema
“Santa has one because he would
look very different without it. He
would just be a normal person and if
he was a normal person he would not
have a sled or elves or presents.”
Brooklyn Bromley
“Santa has a beard because that’s
just how Santa looks. He likes it the
way it is because it feels soft and
nice and that’s how a beard should
feel.”
Kylie Caswell
“No one is supposed to see Santa
so we don’t know if he has a beard
but I think he has one. I think it lets
him talk to people with it. He can
talk to anyone because it’s magic. He
can talk all the languages because
his beard lets him talk to all the
people he meets.”
Nowah Dunsby
“I think Santa likes his beard so he
keeps it because it’s all soft like a
lamb’s wool and he likes it because
of that. Mrs. Claus really likes it a lot
because it’s soft and she likes how it
feels.”
Ainsley Garniss
“He has a big beard because he’s a
big guy. Old people, when they grow
up and get big like Santa, grow
beards. Some are very big like Santa
and some are even bigger and if they
are bigger then they have bigger
beards.”
Wesley Marks
“Santa has a beard because he’s
old. All old people have beards,
Everyone knows that. He has to keep
his beard and it’s big and bushy
because he likes it.”
Mikel Metzloff
“Santa has a beard because he’s
really, really, really old. Really old
people like that have beards. People
remember Santa because his beard is
long so he doesn’t shave it off.”
Cooper Mitchell
“If Santa didn’t have a beard, he
wouldn’t be Santa anymore. He
would be a nobody and just a normal
person. He couldn’t bring presents
without a beard, because we’re not
supposed to take presents from
strange normal people. We can take
presents from Santa though.”
Larissa Van Niekerk
“Santa has a beard because he’s
old. Some old people have beards,
that’s just the way it is. He keeps his
clean and white and glowing though
so people will know he isn’t just a
plain guy. Plain guys aren’t good.
He’s Santa and has to have a white
beard.”
Hunter Whitfield
“Santa loves snow so he likes
having a beard that is white and
looks like snow. His beard is just like
the snow, but it is a bit fluffier. He
really, really likes his beard.
Sometimes people just get beards
though, and Santa’s is longer and
special because it has to be for
Santa.”
