“I remember getting a little kitty
for Christmas. It’s not real, it runs on
batteries. I got it from mommy and
daddy and that’s why I remember it
and why it’s so important. I like it
because mommy and daddy gave it
to me.”
Gloria VanMaar
“My first memory of Christmas is
the Christmas tree going up. We put
it up on a weekend. My whole
family puts it up. We put stars, bells,
Christmas balls and a snowman up
that says ‘let it snow’. My little sister
puts pictures on the tree too.”
Ben Wynja
“I remember the Christmas that I
got my Cat in the Hat game. I can
play that game. It’s a really fun
game to play. I play it a lot with my
sister. It’s a lot of fun.”
Paige Bruinsma
“I remember the Jesus was born
because my first memory is my
mom telling me that it happened. I
remember it because people read it
to me a lot and sing about it.”
Alexis DenHollander
“My first memory is getting
presents. I remember getting
earrings and I love them. They’re
gold and I forget who got them for
me, but I always remember them.”
Elyse Meinen
“I have a lot of memories about
Christmas. I remember going to my
Grandma’s and my Oma’s and I
remember that. My first memory is
putting up the two Christmas trees
at home. We have a small one
and a big one. I decorate the
small one and my mom decorates
the big one. We have lots of
decorations.”
Thomas Finlay
“I remember opening presents
with my family. It’s special because
I like spending that time with my
family and I don’t get to spend a lot
of time with them. Our mom gives
us special presents to open first.”
Brooke Jurjens
“My mom and dad told me about
Jesus being born. That’s my first
memory. They told me that story at
Christmas so I remember it first. I
don’t know why I remember it.”

Santa – both the good and the not-
quite-as-good.
While Ted the Elf on the Shelf is a
new addition to the family, Julie has
done her best to bring a pair of
traditions from her childhood over to
her new family.
The first is Christmas baking,
which was always plentiful in her
younger years. Julie has continued
the tradition, creating everything
from shortbread to gingerbread and
from Christmas bark to fudge, all of
which Matt says he’s more than
happy to eat – it is the Christmas
season after all, he says.
The second tradition is visible on
the family’s Christmas tree, as
Julie’s mother has been buying her a
year-marking ornament every year
since she was born. With Julie
having plenty of ornaments to add to
the tree, the marking of each year
with a Christmas ornament has
continued with both Connor and
Brayden receiving an ornament
every year from their grandmother to
add to the tree.
Back to the tree, it’s always real
with the Shortreeds. Julie says that
growing up there was always a real
tree in her family’s home over the
holidays. Matt’s family was
different, as he says he grew up with
an artificial tree, but he has yielded
to Julie’s love for a real tree and is
happy he has.
Both Matt and Julie grew up on
farms, so they very much were
raised under the classic farm
Christmas rule of no gift activity
until all the chores were done for the
morning.
Things are very much the same, as
Matt is a beef farmer, but with his
sons far too young to help with the
chores, the responsibility falls
squarely on his shoulders.
It may not be that way for long,
however, as Connor has very clearly
displayed an interest in the family
business.
Connor’s only toys are farm toys
and this year he only wanted one
thing from Santa – he started asking
back in the summer: a baler.
With such knowledge of farm
equipment, there’s no doubt Connor
will be lending Matt a hand around
the farm in no time.
