Santa Claus’ beard used as a scarf, calling card
Mrs. Jeffrey’s 1/2 class at
Maitland River Elementary School
thought long and hard about Santa
Claus’ beard and why he keeps it
before sharing their thoughts with
The Citizen.
“Santa grew his beard because he
needs it to protect his neck from the
snow. He thinks his beard is warmer
than a scarf, and being warm is
important when he is on his sled and
flying around.”
Aubrey Anne Cameron
“Santa’s beard is what makes him
look like Santa Claus. My dad has a
beard, but it doesn’t make him look
like Santa Claus. But my dad shaves
his off and I think he looks better
without it. Santa wouldn’t though.
He wouldn’t look like Santa without
it.”
Naomi Campbell
“Santa would look silly without a
beard. I don’t know why he would
look silly, I just think that if I saw
Santa without his beard I would
think he isn’t Santa and he looks
silly.”
Amelia Foreman
“Santa has a beard because no one
else really has a beard like his. He
needs to be different so he grows his
big beard and keeps it perfectly
white. He just likes being different.”
Theo Gregoriadis
“Santa has a beard because he’s
Santa and his beard is important for
being himself. Without it he
wouldn’t be Santa. He needs it to be
him.”
Logan Hayes
“Santa’s beard is what makes him
Santa so he can’t get rid of it because
that’s what makes him able to give
presents to people. If he didn’t have
his beard he wouldn’t be able to
deliver gifts. He wouldn’t be Santa
because Santa needs a beard.”
Noah Martin
“I don’t know why Santa has a
beard. He just does and he doesn’t
shave. That’s all I know about
Santa’s beard.”
Avery Toll
“Santa has it because it helps him
stay warm when he’s giving out
presents. It keeps him warm when he
is on his sled and flying in the cold
winter air. He likes his beard and he
thinks it is comfortable so he doesn’t
want to shave it and have to wear a
scarf.”
Nathan Atton
“Santa wants a big long bushy
white beard. He just wants it so he
grows it because he likes it and
wants to keep it.”
Emma Carter
“Santa like his beard and wants to
keep it and have it because it can
keep kids warm when they sit on his
knee to tell him what they want for
Christmas. It keeps their back warm
and lets them be warm while they
give Santa their Christmas lists.”
Sarah Hallahan
“Santa has a beard because he is
old. All old people don’t have beards
because my dad doesn’t and he is
old, but all old people who are magic
have beards like wizards. Santa is
old and has magic and has a beard
because he has magic and is old
enough.”
Cady Kranjec
“Santa uses his beard to keep him
warm so he has it for that. The beard
is better than a scarf or a turtleneck
because it’s on his face so he won’t
lose it or have it fly off when he is on
his sleigh.”
Harlow Campbell-MacKay
“Santa should shave his beard. If
my dad had a beard I would tell him
to shave it off because beards are
bad and shouldn’t be on people’s
faces.”
Kaleigh McLean
“Santa has a beard because I like
him. I like him because he has a
beard and because his beard keeps
him warm when he is bringing me
presents.”
Steven Nicholson
“If Santa Claus didn’t have a
beard, everyone would think he
would be a lot younger than he is. He
is hundreds of years old and when
you get old you have a beard because
old people have beards on their
faces.”
Ellee Power
“Santa has a beard because it
keeps him warm in the middle of the
night. Sometimes I get cold at night
and have to pull up my blanket. His
beard is warmer than winter clothes
so he uses it instead of hats and mitts
and scarves and blankets and
anything else.”
Preston Robinson
“Santa has a bushy beard because
it’s cold.”
Robert Jefferson
“Santa has a beard because he
doesn’t shave. If he did his chin
would get cold, then he would get
frost bite and not be able to give
presents and everyone would be
sad.”
Ben Weber
“Santa is old so he has a beard.”
Jackson Leeman
“Santa has to have it because it’s
Santa. If he didn’t, people wouldn’t
know he was Santa. He needs it.”

He uses it to hide things
The reason behind Santa Claus keeping his big bushy beard is a mystery to all, though the
Grade 1/2 class at Maitland River Elementary School had some ideas about why the jolly old
elf keeps the lip sweater. Back row, from left: Ellee Power, Nathan Atton, Kaleigh McLean,
