Paramedics recognized for Blyth pre-hospital birth Over a dozen Huron County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) employees were recognized for their exemplary work last week. Huron County Council recognized their employees at its Dec. 16 committee of the whole meeting under a number of different categories, from time of service to saving a life to bringing a new life into the world. Jeff Horseman, acting EMS Chief, handed out the awards, beginning with three paramedics who received the Governor General of Canada Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Award last year, but who were not recognized by Huron County Council at the time. Horseman told councillors that paramedics, in order to be eligible for recognition, had to have worked for 20 years in the field. Last year’s recipients were Mark Borrmann, Phillip Smith and Karen Rollins- Beneteau – all of whom had 20 years of service. This year’s recipients were Greg Gordon and Mario Oliveira, who both received Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal First Bars for 30 years of service and Gary Renaud, who received his second bar for 40 years of EMS service. Horseman presented the final award of the day to seven paramedics who were involved with a pre-hospital birth on Blyth Road, in early 2014. The paramedics –Adam Johnston, Gord Phillips, Robyn Nash, Joel Paakkunainen, Laura Whitmore, Mason Halstead and Andrew Kramer – arrived in waves to find Amy Vanderhaar in active labour and a breech delivery. The paramedics successfully delivered Alexi on the scene and both Amy and Alexi were then transported to the hospital where they could from the council and staff of the Municipality of Huron East M erry C hristma s Wishing you and your family peace & happiness throughout this Holiday Season!
