Christmas marked by joyous visits with family, friends
The mood remains high and the
numbered days to Christmas are
very small. For the young set the
wait is nearly over. Christmas has
arrived.
Family visits are happening and
take many forms. For the traditional,
it’s turkey or nothing. For others,
new menus and events make the visit
complete. It really doesn’t matter as
long as the visits happen. Stories get
told, time shared and food and fun
happen along the way. The hope,
peace, joy and love of the advent
season is meshed as family is
celebrated.
Healthy Season Greetings to
Roger McHardy who is glad for our
health system and happy to be back
in Brussels.
Friends are the family you get to
pick, and this week I’m grateful that
in 1967 I picked three good ones as
we started training to be registered
nurses at St. Joseph’s in Guelph.
Dinner together on Friday night in
Kitchener has us laughing and
wondering boisterously about the
stories we each remember differently.
That’s the best thing about old
friends, you don’t have to explain.
They just know what you mean. So
our visits cover today’s events,
descendants, past episodes in our
lives and the joy that sharing 45
years of life brings.
Church activities are a big part of
the Christmas festivities. The birth
of Jesus, so long ago, often forgotten
in other months, reminds us each
December that new life brings
change. So each year, we are
different from the last and new
details of our lives affect how we
react to life this year. The constant is
that we know that we are part of a
much bigger thing than us and that
only when we love, respect and
share, do we feel good.
As we get ready to celebrate the
birth of Christ this year, we are ready
to give to others, sharing our lives
and celebrating our many blessings.
Today is decorating day here, with
the grandgirls from Listowel at the
ready. Talk of cookies and
caramel corn are also in the plans,
we’ll see what results will
come from impending chaos.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Last minute shopping
Brussels United Church was the place to be on Saturday if you chose to forego Christmas
baking and instead rely on the skills of others. From left: Sandra Machan, Sue Overholt and
Gayle McArter were plenty busy that day keeping customers like Ron Clarkson, second from
right, and Janet Haertel, right, pleased. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Cadet dinner
hosts over 100
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The executive and members of
Brussels Legion Branch 218 wish
everyone a Merry Christmas as
2015 draws to a close. Many
changes are happening around the
Branch and we hope everyone bears
with us during the construction
process.
It has been a week of celebrating
Christmas around the Branch for
various groups.
The Cadet Corps 2967 held its
annual Christmas dinner and awards
presentations for the Cadets and
their parents. Over 100 were in
attendance to enjoy the evening.
The Parent Support Committee
prepared the roast beef dinner for
the attendees. A special presentation
