The Citizen, 2015-12-10, Page 19THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2015. PAGE 19. MRES campaign asks Morris-Turnberry for $40,000 The Building Bridges to our Future campaign has asked Morris- Turnberry Council to earmark up to $40,000 over the next two years to help with its enrichment of the F.E. Madill Secondary School and Maitland River Elementary School sports fields, though council gave no definitive response. During council’s Dec. 1 meeting, Teresa Becker and Kari-Anne Cameron approached council to introduce the group and what they hope to accomplish. The campaign, which is a joint venture between the two schools and a group of citizens, hopes to upgrade the sports fields at Madill as well as install a new playground at Maitland River Elementary School and transform the grounds between the two sites, which are just outside Morris-Turnberry’s border in North Huron. “There are a lot of children from Morris-Turnberry who attend the schools and people from the community who use the facilities,” Becker explained. “We want to further that by creating accessible facilities.” The changes have a heavy focus on accessibility according to Becker and Cameron because of the push in Ontario to have all public buildings and sites accessible. “We want to see more [people] using the fields outside of school hours and students getting more use of the sites during school,” Cameron said. “Right now, [Wingham] Minor Soccer uses the sports field and hopefully that will increase with better fields.” The duo also pointed out that having the lower field, which is right now the only field used for organized sports at Madill, accessible was even more important with the recent vehicle-on-bike collision that cost teacher Julie Sawchuk the use of her legs. “Julie is a teacher and a coach,” Cameron said. “We would like to make it possible for her to get back to coaching through accessibility paths.” The paths will be connected to walking paths between the schools that will link up with the Wingham trail system as well, according to Cameron. “We hope that helps with the trail system,” she said. “That will bring in the community and allow them to use the facilities and contribute to the health of children, seniors and the whole community.” Becker explained that the first goal for the program is the playground which was already started in August when a smaller piece of equipment was installed. “This piece of equipment is fully accessible,” she said. “People in wheelchairs or with walkers can be right on the playground. It also has a lot of sensory parts for children with sensory or motor issues.” Madill’s track and upper and lower fields are next, and the goal, according to Becker, is to re-crown the existing sports field and deal with drainage issues as well as install the aforementioned accessibility paths. The current condition of the field is not suitable, according to Cameron, who reported that Madill hosted the majority of its rugby events at other schools because of fear of injuries at the site. The upper field would be ENID (BRIGHAM) MACDONALD Enid (Brigham) MacDonald of Blyth passed away, surrounded by her family, at Stratford General Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015.
