Brussels group celebrates its 40th anniversary
By Brenda (McCutcheon) Keffer
Forty years ago or so, a bunch of
girls who hung out together, decided
to have an annual Brussels girls’
Christmas dinner and social. I am
proud to say we are still going.
This year’s anniversary celebra-
tion was held at Cinnamon
Jim’s after this year’s Santa Claus
parade.
We shared: going off to high
school, college and university, but
still keeping in touch – dating and
chasing boys, some married, some
divorced, but still supporting each
other through sickness with chil-
dren, ourselves or spouses, losing
grandparents and some having lost
parents. Between having or not hav-
ing children, career demands and
every day highs and lows, the most
important thing is no matter where
we live and how demanding life can
be, we still get together once a year
at the annual Christmas party.
Some played in a band called the
Ding-a-lings, some of us took 4-H
and learned how to cook and sew.
We loved to roller skate – at least
twice a week, sometimes three
times. Some took figure skating,
some music/piano lessons. We did
not have cell phones or texting or
internet but we managed to keep in
touch and get together on Friday
nights, Saturdays and Sundays –
unless family called.
Marie and Clarence McCutcheon
opened up their home for the first
potluck supper. Little brother Gary
couldn’t get out of the house fast
enough due to the noise. He had
never heard so much talking. We
still get together, sometimes for
overnight stays now, so we can have
an even better visit. We reminisce
about the old times. We talk about
Carl and Charlie from the nursing
home. Some of us worked there too
on weekends. We talk about
Maggie’s and the cost of her burg-
ers. The cost of a pop and chips. We
talk about pajama parties, gravel pit
parties, past Christmas parties. We
talk about sitting on the steps in
front of the library and getting the
truckers to honk their horns. We
formed the first Leo Club in
Brussels in the 1970s. We experi-
mented with cigarettes under the
bridge in the Lions Park. We talk
about being in the hotel and at one
time being able to walk from one
hotel to the other for drinks, or get-
ting thrown out of one and heading
to the other. We remember different
groups of people who came to town
for roller skating or the hotel. There
were the Grey Township and Ethel
kids, the Blyth and Walton kids, the
Belgrave kids and of course the boys
are remembered first!
Our plans are to continue to meet,
as long as we last. I guess the moral
of the story is that Brussels is a
small community, but certainly one
that was worth growing up in. We
have so many fond memories and
some tragedies, but everybody pulls
together and supports one another
through life’s ups and downs.
Family is important, friends may
come and go, but the true friends are
able to pick up the conversation as if
there was no break, no matter how
long it has been.
Quite the tradition
A group of Brussels natives has been making a point to get together at least once a year, now,
for 40 years. This year’s get-together was at Cinnamon Jim’s after the annual Brussels Santa
Claus parade. Back row, from left: Gail (White) Semple, Peggy (Gibson) Aitchison, Julie
McCall, Julie (Campbell) Stratton, Joan (Huether) Richmond, Patti (Hilts) Scheerer, Brenda
(McCutcheon) Keffer, Bonnie Richmond, Joan (Mair) Bordash, Joyce (Ireland) King, Susan
(Langlois) Myers and Joan (McArter) Cloakey. Front row, from left: Gwen (Bernard) Doherty,
Linda (Machan) McDonald and Michelle (McCutcheon) Blake. Absent were Carol Raymond
and Gloria (White) Coulter. (Photo submitted)
