Chime In Choir entertains at Knox Christmas show Representatives of the Wingham and District Hospital’s “Our Hospital, Our Future” campaign came to Huron County Council last week with their eyes on the initiative’s top fundraising tier. Karl Ellis, President and CEO of the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance and Bernie Bailey, Municipal Fundraising Chair for the project, discussed the ambitious, $4 million project with council. Bailey proudly announced that thanks to a handful of generous donations, the group was already 23 per cent of the way to its goal. Bailey told council that the committee’s hope was that the county would occupy the top spot on the fundraising chart, which called for a donation of $800,000 over the five-year pledge period. As reported in previous stories in The Citizen, the campaign will fund renovations to the hospital’s ambulatory care, outpatient clinics, oncology, day surgery suite, inpatient services, a pharmacy and its sterilization departments. There are also a number of other initiatives relating to the accessibility of the hospital, which was built decades ago. Bailey told council that the improvements proposed to the oncology department of the hospital is the most important. With Wingham serving as the only oncology department between Owen Sound, Stratford and London, having something local is essential to Huron County patients. Fifty per cent of oncology patients treated in Wingham, the pair said, come from Huron County. But Bailey urged councillors not just to think about the project in terms of health care, but as economic development as well. It’s well known, he said, that the healthcare field is a huge driver of economic development, pointing out that one trip across the county to access care in Wingham can create a handful of jobs, whether it be through buying gas, getting dinner or stopping at the Blyth Festival to watch a play. In keeping with the county’s grant policy, staff will prepare a report on the request and present it to council at a future meeting. However, the request led to a larger discussion about how the county gives to hospitals within its borders. Central Huron Deputy-Mayor Dave Jewitt said he was concerned that council was approaching Hospital reps request $800,000 of county Joy to the world Knox Church in Belgrave held its Christmas Cantata on Sunday evening, welcoming the Chime In Choir, as well as a number of community members who took on dramatic roles to help tell the story of Christmas. The church’s choir, however, performed a number of songs, including music from The Nutcracker and “We Three Kings” among other holiday favourites.
