Concert set for St. Ambrose
December is moving right along,
A wonderful time of the year. A
month when others are thought of on
a regular basis as the message of the
history of Christmas unfolds. In the
four weeks of Advent, the
anticipation time before Christmas,
thoughts and actions for peace,
hope, joy and love are encouraged.
Many in our community and the
world do not have a good life. Food
is scarce, money, peace of mind and
hope are minimal. So when we go
about our days with the ever-
constant reminder that Christmas is
coming, we actually do something
about the inequality. We give food,
cash and time to help others,
as we share the giving mood
of the time.
The Christmas Bureau, held at the
Catholic Church in Wingham this
year for our area is a bustle of
activity as folks shared gifts, time
and cash to make Christmas a little
brighter for our friends. Loss of jobs,
ill health, and a changing economy
all affect our community, all out of
our control but life is affected. To
offer hope, the Huron County
Christmas Bureau steps in and
organizes a place of hope. The
generosity of our community is a
wonder and the sharing of the season
is appreciated.
In case you find you have a few
extra dollars, the 5Rs has a jar by the
cash register. As we prepared to
move, the floor needed some serious
attention and 1,000 square feet of
retail space is a lot of attention.
Being a faith-filled board, the right
thing to do was replace the floor
before things were moved in. As a
not-for-profit organization, we rely
on community support, so if you
care to share, pop into the 5Rs,
admire our new space and the floor
and ask for details.
Music is a big part of the season –
concerts, services, radio and sing-
alongs. Mark this Sunday, 7:30 p.m.
at St. Ambrose Catholic Church as
the choirs from the area churches
share their music and let us sing
along to some favourites. The
Brussels Ministerial folks organize
this every year and the collection
gathered, is used over the winter for
those in need.
Still on music – for just a good
sing, all of your favourite Christmas
songs come to the Brussels United
Church on Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. so raise
your voice, share your excitement
and jingle your bells as the Advent
waiting is coming to an end.
Don’t get caught up in the material
world of Christmas, give gifts that
will help make the world a better
place, not contribute to the “stuff”
we all own already.
Enjoy the excitement of the
season.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Legion build
commencing
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It has been a busy week around
the Brussels Legion Branch. As
many folks can see, construction has
started at the Branch. The addition
to the north side of the building will
house the new accessible
washrooms, lift, storage area and
Cadet office. A major fundraiser
will be held this weekend with
Christmas meat draws. There will
be a dozen draws with three prizes
per draw and then the mega draw.
Wings and fries will be available.
Come out and join us and help
“Boost the Build”!
Comrades of Branch 218 gathered
at Schimanski Family Funeral
Home to conduct a Legion service
for the late Comrade Gary Dauphin.
There were 20 Comrades in
attendance with the service being
led by Padre Sandra Cable.
The members of the Branch
served the luncheon following the
funeral service for Comrade
Dauphin. The dozen members
worked at the arena to prepare and
serve the lunch to over 200 people.
The Thursday night darts had a
good bunch in attendance. Winners
were: first, Daisy Schmidt and Gord
Jacklin; second, Deb Burch and
Roger McHardy; high, Sandra
Josling, 138 and Roger, 121; first
skunk of the season goes to Deb and
Roger, but they still captured second
place for the night!
The Friday night supper was
enjoyed by a small crowd. Sandra
Josling was the guest chef and had
prepared delicious bruschetta
chicken. This week will be roast
pork.
