Walton community mourns Dauphin, Dunbar Huron Tractor named top float in parade All lit up The Brussels Santa Claus parade featured plenty of floats, but also individuals, in this case alongside tiny ponies, all lit up for the holidays. (Vicky Bremner photo) It was another great week of weather and Christmas decorations have appeared everywhere. It was a beautiful day for the Santa Claus parade in Brussels and other places. The weather looks good for the second deer hunt, so be wary when driving because the deer are on the move. The month of December is upon us, so that means Christmas is just around the corner. The folks I have talked to about their Christmas shopping have ranged from I have it all done to some to none! I’m afraid I am the “some” person. There are only 23 days left to shop, so everyone better jump to it. Shop local whenever possible to help keep our businesses in Brussels open! It is with sadness that we learn of the passing of Barb Dunbar. Barb lived just outside of Ethel until she retired to Listowel a few years ago. She was a lively lady, great fun and had a smile that would light up a room. Her best friend was Marg Bennett who she worked with at London Life in London in the early years. There are stories of fun times when they moved to Toronto together and then as fate would have it, the pair each settled into married life in the Brussels area. She will be missed by her children David and Becky and their families. Our condolences to all. Brussels lost another outstanding citizen this past week in Gary Dauphin. Gary will be missed by his close and loving family of wife Heather, and children Mike, Holly, Sarah and Rebecca and their families. Gary was a fine businessman, owning and operating Dauphin Feed Mill in Dungannon since 1986 and moving to Brussels that same year. They expanded their operations when they purchased the Walton Feed Mill in the mid 1990s and renovated and created the Dauphin Country Store in 2007. A well-liked and avid sportsman, he loved hockey and spent many years coaching the Brussels Crusaders team. He was a quiet and generous supporter of the community and will be missed by his family, employees and many friends. Our condolences to all. We send get-well wishes to Dave Marks, who is under the weather. We hope he is home from hospital and is doing well. We are glad to hear Bill Aitcheson and Todd Wheeler, who have both had a couple of health issues lately, are doing very well. A group of ladies who have been friends for 40 years, since public school, gathered to enjoy a Christmas party again! The ladies gathered at Cinnamon Jim’s for a lovely dinner and then were welcomed to the home of Linda McDonald for the evening. The ladies spent a fun night reminiscing and remembering old times and lots of laughs. Gathering for the night were girls (by maiden names) Linda Machan, Peggy Aitcheson, Gwen Bernard, Joan McArter, Bonnie Richmond, Susan Langlois, Julie Campbell, Michelle McCutcheon, Gail White, Julie McCall, Joan Huether, Brenda McCutcheon, Joyce Ireland, and Joan Mair. Unable to attend were Carol Raymond and Gloria White. It’s amazing to have friends who enjoy each other’s company and still manage to get together. Congrats to all you ladies. It was a little ahead of the date, but a surprise birthday party was held for Rick McDonald. Brother Neil is home from Vancouver and he invited family and friends to celebrate Rick’s 60th birthday. Dinner was enjoyed at The Docks in Bayfield and then a social time at his home followed. Celebrating birthdays this past week were Lin Steffler, Kaitlin Williamson and kicking off December are Cameron Blair, Tim Dionne, Daniel Fritz, Lilly Fraser, Jim Fritz, Scott Godkin, Justin Hoegy, Curtis Wharton and Paul McCallum. Happy birthday to all. In spite of the cold weather and no snow, Brussels celebrated Christmas in style with “The Gift of Christmas” Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, Nov. 28. Children eagerly lined up to tell their Christmas wishes to Santa and Mrs. Claus after handing in their coloured pictures for the colouring contest or getting their faces painted by Snippity the clown and friends. The winners of the colouring contest were: Ages 1-4, Sophia Burkholder and Charlie Dreyer; 5-8, Ava Strome and Avery Mueller and 9-12, Ally Riegling and Dawson Dunbar. The evening included free skating, food to eat and a turkey draw manned by Ambassador of the Fair Tiffany Deitner, won by Carrie Grisdale and Sydney Bauer. The winners of the floats are: most original float, Fretz Welding; best service club, Brussels Agricultural Society; best comm- ercial, Bulk and Bargain; best overall float, Huron Tractor. Sherrie Oliver, Deb Seili and Chris TenPas of the Brussels Business Group said that the parade wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the community. GARY JOSEPH DAUPHIN With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gary Joseph Dauphin, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle who passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015 in his 67th year. Gary was the beloved husband of Heather (Park), father of Holly Dauphin, Sarah and Andy Overholt, Rebecca and Al deVos and Mike and Michelle Dauphin, and adored grandfather of Erin, Sam, Hayden, Bryn, Dylan, Aliya and Lana. He is also survived by his mother Nora Dauphin, sister Susan and Brian Verburg, mother-in-law Norine Park, his in-laws Sharon and Dave Dawson, Rick Park, Greg and Nancy Park, Sue and Doug Brown and his many nieces and nephews. Gary was predeceased by his father Joe Dauphin (2015), his brother Mark Dauphin (2001) his father-in-law Richard Park (1995) and his sister-in-law Diane Park (2010). The farming community was a big part of Gary’s life and he took a lot of pride in the relationships he had established over the past 29 years and in the business he built, which he was proud to hand down to his son Michael. His pride and joy were his kids and grandkids (who he couldn’t get enough of) and all his friends and family. These past few weeks he adored his nurses Sarah and LeeAnn. We thank you very much for taking such great care of him and to our niece Melissa who was with us in the end. Thank you very much. Gary was a Legion member for 41 years, which he enjoyed, following in his father’s footsteps who was a member for 70 years. Friends were received by the family at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels. A Royal Canadian Legion Service, under the auspices of Brussels Branch No. 218 RCL, was conducted on Monday evening from the funeral home. The funeral service was conducted from Brussels United Church on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Rev. Gary Clark and Pastor Neil Ward officiated. Cremation is to follow with interment of cremated remains in Dungannon Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation - Oncology Department or the Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association would be appreciated by the family.
