Review refers recreation, day care to committee
After completing its second
service delivery review in three
years, Huron East Council has
referred a handful of issues –
council composition, the Vanastra
Day Care and Recreation – to
the municipality’s Administration
Committee.
After reviewing a number of the
municipality’s departments at
council’s previous two meetings in
October and November, Chief
Administrative Officer Brad Knight
presented a summary of the
meetings, including comments made
by councillors throughout the
process, at council’s Nov. 17
meeting.
While councillors found they were
mostly pleased with how the
municipality was being run – as well
as where Huron East stood in
comparison to its neighbours in
terms of cost and value for taxes –
the three aforementioned
departments, in council’s opinion,
warranted further discussion.
In general discussion surrounding
the composition of council,
councillors felt that Huron East’s
political structure could operate with
as few as seven members – one
councillor from each of the five
wards and one mayor and one
deputy-mayor, both elected at
large – but that if a decision were to
be made, that it should take into
account the public’s thoughts on the
matter.
While council was not aware of
any significant concerns from the
public in regards to how council is
run or the costs associated with
council, there was also discussion
surrounding shifting Huron East’s
ward boundaries, or eliminating the
wards altogether.
Knight noted that council
composition was reviewed in 2012
and it was decided that it should
remain status quo, but that it should
