And did the Holy and the Just, The Sovereign of the skies, Stoop down to wretchedness and dust, That guilty worms might rise? Yes, the Redeemer left His throne, His radiant throne on high, (Surprising mercy! love unknown!) To suffer, bleed, and die! He took the dying traitor’s place, And suffered in his stead; For man (O miracle of grace!) For man the Saviour bled! Dear Lord, what heavenly wonders dwell In Your atoning blood! By this are sinners snatched from Hell, And rebels brought to God! What glad return can I impart For favours so divine? O take my all, this worthless heart, And make it wholly Thine! Anne Steele, 1859 “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever!” 1 Chronicles 16:34 “Let them give thanks to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men.” Psalm 107:8 “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Greeting everyone at the door were Bob and Rene Richmond. The congregation enjoyed a Christmas carol sing-song while everyone gathered for the service led by members of the band. Rev. Gary Clark welcomed everyone to church on such a beautiful sunny day. The first Advent candle, the Candle of Hope was lit while the congregation sang “I’ll Show Love At Christmas” and the first verse of the hymn “A Candle is Burning.” Rev. Clark drew everyone’s attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin with special attention that the Sunday Fun Time Group Blyth (Sunday school) are having their cookie exchange on Dec. 6. They are asking that anyone wishing to make cookies to bring them to church on Sunday, Dec. 6. The cookie exchange will take place after church that day. You will have your choice of cookies for $3 a dozen. Proceeds are going to help contribute to the Church Cup held on Dec. 28. Pastor Sandra Cable invited everyone to her home on Monday, Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 for a discussion on Advent from 1:30 until 3.pm with tea, coffee and treats. Rev. Clark invited everyone to greet one another. The hymn “Jesus Came Bringing Us Hope” was sung. The opening prayer was the singing of “Away in a Manger” followed by the singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The scripture readings were from Isaiah 40:1-11. The hymn “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” was sung and the children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Rev. Clark asked the children how many days until Christmas. Some said 25 or 26 days. He then asked them what they wanted for Christmas. One answer was a hamster and his home, an Xbox and one was toothpaste. We often make a Christmas list for ourselves but we should also make a list of things to give to someone else. The best gift is a Christmas hug. The children along with the congregation said a prayer and then went downstairs for their time of fellowship. “White Christmas” was the anthem that the band played. Rev. Clark’s message to the congregation was “Christmas Through God’s Eyes, The Promise.” Advent means coming. We live in a safe country and have all the things we want. The people in Isaiah’s time lived in captivity and slavery and were taken far away to other countries. Anything from God was welcomed. When we are living high we are living high at the expense of others and sometimes it comes back to bite us. God sends us hope. Hope for everything we have lost and hope of it coming back. God’s promise is everlasting. The rainbow is a sign of God’s promise. It is important to hear the Christmas stories. Faith is not believing that God can but knowing God will. The favourite hymn was “Silent Night.” The offering was received during the singing of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” followed by the offertory response “As With Gladness Men of Old,” the offertory prayer and the prayers of the people and silent prayers. The last hymn was “Joy to the World” followed by the benediction, and the response, the chorus of “Hope is a Star.” “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish you a Merry Christmas” were sung accompanied by the band. The blessing was said before everyone was invited downstairs for soup and sandwiches prepared by Brussels and dessert prepared by Blyth and fellowship with one another. (Vicky Bremner photo) FDNH bids farewell to members The Fire Department of North Huron was busy in late October and early November, logging weeks of training for personnel and helping raise awareness of the dangers of potential fires and carbon monoxide problems. During North Huron Township Council’s Nov. 16 meeting, Fire Chief David Sparling reported firefighters had participated in one week of clandestine drug lab awareness training, one week of medical first response training and one week of aerial operations training, as well as two full days of recruit training and two-and-a-half days of Ontario Fire Code training. The department also continued the Alarmed for Life smoke and carbon monoxide alarm campaign in Morris-Turnberry, completing the campaign for the 2015 calendar year. This was on top of an average of one call every three days. Sparling explained that the department is finding the danger of fires isn’t necessarily being given the respect it deserves and the department is now focusing on the fact that, during a fire, according to studies, residents only have “2:45 to get out alive.” “We’re making that a big push,” Sparling explained, pointing to the fact that the Blyth and District Community Centre now features a board with the information on it. The department also distributed a special book focusing on emergencies in places of worship to the Blyth Ministerial Association. In other department news, firefighters Alvin Gerber and Kyle Vollmer are leaving the department. Gerber is getting married and leaving for that reason, while Vollmer is taking a leave of absence in order to work in Australia in an extended work program. Sparling said he was happy to report that Vollmer will be working for a local fire department while in Australia. Councillor Trevor Seip asked if losing firefighters is a problem for the department. Sparling said that, since amalgamation, there has been a full roster for a total of 10 months. He said a recruitment drive was planned for January.
