North Huron Township Council
approved a proposed costing for the
Regional Sears Drama Festival to
rent Memorial Hall in March next
year.
According to Director of
Recreation and Facilities Pat
Newson, a pricetag of $1,000, plus
HST, for the rental of the hall
throughout the day and evening from
Feb. 28 to March 6 was suggested to
make the rental affordable for the
festival.
Newson’s recommendation is that
council provide this blanket rate and
request that the drama festival
recognize North Huron as an event
sponsor.
The proposed rate is a significant
discount, according to Newson’s
report, as it would normally cost the
festival $470 plus HST per day (or
approximately $2,800) for the
proposed duration of the festival.
While North Huron has recently
instituted a bylaw that would state
that events like the drama festival are
already receiving a reduced rate and
therefore no reduction would be
made, Newson stated in her report
that the reduction is made possible
through a joint-use agreement the
township has with the Avon
Maitland District School Board.
“This event exceeds the hours of
usage inside the agreement, but does
fall in the spirit of the agreement,”
Newson reported. “There are no
other bookings planned for these
dates at Blyth Memorial Community
Hall.”
Newson reported the event is
expected to bring over 200 students
and 1,200 audience members to
Blyth over the six days.
During the meeting, Newson said
the festival provides a unique
opportunity for the community and
local youth to see what the theatre at
Memorial Hall has to offer.
Councillor Trevor Seip asked
whether the discounted rate was
suggested by the municipality or if it
came from the organization.
“The cost was sent to me by [Blyth
Festival General Manager] Deb
Sholdice,” Newson said. “She has
been the one negotiating with the
Sears Drama Festival and that’s the
price that was suggested.”
Newson also explained that
because the joint-use agreement
specifies that usage prior to 4 p.m. is
handled independently from rentals,
a flat rate was more palatable for her.
Councillor Brock Vodden said he
was in favour of the discounted
rental.
“I think the outreach that is
involved makes this a very important
investment as far as council is
concerned,” he said. “I’m very
supportive of this recommendation.”
Reeve Neil Vincent said he also
felt it was a great opportunity.
“When my daughter was in high
school, the local high school
sponsored [the Sears Festival] and
used the Blyth hall at that time. It
brings a lot of students from a
sizable area into North Huron to see
what we have there for the theatre
and I think, on that basis alone, it’s
worth it to advertise what we have
here.”
Council approved the
recommendation.
Remember the childhood magic of
a dark snowy winter’s night, the
mystery of the beautiful manger
scene outside the church door, the
sound of horse bells on a wagon in
the Santa Claus parade? Remember
the glister of moonlight on the
hanging icicles or the hopeful
feeling inspired by twinkling Xmas
lights on a winter’s walk?
Be sure to join the Blyth Festival
Singers and soloists on Dec. 6 for
music that will celebrate that
magical season of winter and invoke
the holy season of Christmas.
“Believe” is a concert that will
awaken those simple half-
remembered feelings with beautiful
pieces like “ The Darkest Midnight
in December”, “Winter’s Peace”,
“Breath of Heaven” and the
signature song, “Believe.”
The Blyth Festival Singers will
explore new versions of old
favourites with “Variations on Deck
the Hall”, “Jingle Bells,” an “African
Carol,” and the “Huron Carol”.
And what can make Christmas
even more magical, than children?
The Singers special guest is Huron
County’s own Glister Children’s
Choir under the direction of Suzanne
MacVicar, and accompanied by
Bailey Porter.
The Glister Choir is a newly-
formed group of 30 energetic,
musical children who love to sing
and perform. Ranging in age from
six to 15, they hail from all over
Huron County. Director Suzanne has
enjoyed many years of teaching
privately, and last February, she,
along with husband, Wes, and their
two daughters Livia, and Halli, were
able to make their dream of a
children’s choir a reality.
Their hope, as a choir, is to bring
joy and light to each audience
member and chorister alike through
the power of music and song.
The Blyth Festival Singers is a
county-wide community choir under
the auspices of the Blyth Centre for
the Arts. The Singers are under the
professional direction of Sharon
Poelstra and accompanied by Lori
Millian.
The choir of 50 members performs
primarily in Huron County and has
endeavoured to present a high
standard of choral singing since its
inception in 1980.
The performance begins at 3 p.m.
at Blyth Memorial Hall. Tickets cost
$15 for adults, $6 for children and an
entire family can attend for $40.
