North Woods students busy with outdoor activities
By Principal Wendy Armstrong-
Gibson
The Grades 4-6 students and staff
at North Woods Elementary School
would like to thank the Brussels
Legion for providing the
transportation to the Legion on
Remembrance Day. It means so
much more for the children to be
able to visit the cenotaph and lay
their poppy during the ceremony.
We had 19 students register for
Junior Kindergarten for next year.
The children had a chance to meet
some of their soon-to-be classmates
when they visited the school during
the “Calling All Three Year Olds”
event earlier this week. The Huron
County Health Unit, Early Years and
Brussels Library provided
information to families before they
visited Kindergarten teacher Mrs.
Metzger for a snack and chance to
play and do a craft.
Our Kindergarten classes are so
excited about their new outdoor play
space situated right outside their
classroom. The Avon Maitland
District School Board (AMDSB)
installed a large fenced-in area this
fall and our supportive parent
council is kicking off a fundraising
campaign to get a play structure built
in the space. How exciting!
Grade 1 has been busy exploring
colour through their senses. While
they read stories and taste foods that
match the colour of the day they also
have been talking about how the
colour makes them feel. The
children have been coming up with
some great descriptive words as they
collaboratively write poetry about
each of the colours. Some of these
include: red is super, orange is brave,
yellow is joyful, green is lucky, blue
is puddly, purple is amazing and
brown is cozy.
Great creativity, Grade One!
The favourite part of the school
day for many of our students is
getting outside to explore and learn
on the Environmental Grounds.
Grade 2/3 continue to feed the birds
and report seeing an increase in the
number and species of birds visiting
the feeders each day. They keep an
eye on them through their
binoculars.
This same class had a chance to
simulate how all the parts of a tree
work together as they worked with
Erin Dolmage from the Maitland
Valley Conservation Area exploring
‘plant power’. Some students were
the roots while others were the
leaves and branches. They then took
to the trails to learn about the
purpose and importance of seeds.
They explored the meadow and
forest to discover the various ways
seeds can be dispersed.
Grades 4/5 and 6 have been using
the orienteering course at the school.
They have learned about cardinal
direction, reading maps and
following clues as they travel around
in teams on our fantastic trails and
learning grounds. Our students enjoy
the learning grounds and certainly
do appreciate the space they have.
All of our classes are getting into
the Christmas mood as practices
have now started for the Christmas
Concert. Our theme is “A Traditional
Christmas” and will be shared
through song. Please join us on Dec.
8 at 7 p.m. for our concert.
Keeping an eye on things
The Grade 2/3 class at North Woods Elementary has been
keeping busy with both a special plant lesson from the
Maitland Valley Conservation Area as well as some bird
watching, shown above. Enjoying observing and
cataloguing the different species of birds are, from left:
Adelle Kerr, Daniel Ford and Agatha Wall. (Photo submitted)
