County solicitor to review funding application
Continued from page 6
everything it can to help them along
and assist them in finding funding
opportunities.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
(ACW) Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek
expressed some concern, saying that
his council had done the same thing,
essentially treating the process like a
loan to the group applying and that
the provincial government did not
look favourably upon that
arrangement.
Howick Reeve Art Versteeg agreed
with Gowing, saying that the county
should support the group by helping
it find funding, but that the county
should contribute none of its own
money to the project.
North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent
continued to be critical of the trail,
suggesting that if the deadline was
so tight, perhaps the group should
have spoken to council earlier.
Dawson, however, said the group
had only just been notified that they
were shortlisted for the funds a few
weeks earlier, so they were on a
rather tight timeline.
In reference to the county signing
an agreement with G2G Inc. to apply
for these funds, Goderich Deputy-
Mayor Jim Donnelly said he had a
fundamental problem with the
process, saying that council
shouldn’t decide to approve or not
approve signing a document when
councillors had yet to even see the
document.
However, Orchard told Donnelly
that the document would be
reviewed with the county’s solicitor
before any signatures were made.
Council approved the motion,
effectively partnering with G2G Inc.
in their quest for provincial funding.
In an interview after the meeting,
Orchard said that while council will
not have another meeting until
Wednesday, Dec. 2, once the
document has been approved by the
county’s solicitor, it will be clear to
go ahead, despite the decision not
being officially ratified by council at
a meeting.
