County to partner with G2G on cycling funding app Huron County has again come to the aid of the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail, supporting its bid for funding as part of the Ontario Municipal Cycling Infrastructure Program. Paul VanderMolen and Chris Lee of G2G Inc. spoke to council about the funding opportunity at council’s Nov. 18 committee of the whole meeting. The funding is being provided to cycle-friendly projects through #CycleOn: Ontario’s Cycling Strategy – and one of the G2G’s key stakeholder groups has always been cyclists. G2G Inc. submitted an application earlier this year and was approved to go to the next stage of the process, being shortlisted for funds. The deadline to submit a full application, however, is Nov. 27, so council had to make a quick decision, because its next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 2. The entire fund consists of $10 million and municipalities are eligible to apply for funding for up to 50 per cent of the total cost of a cycling infrastructure program to a maximum amount of $325,000. The funding, if the G2G Trail is approved, will be provided sometime between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2018. Dr. Grant Dawson, the Director of Grants for G2G Inc., also spoke to the application, saying that Huron County would have to officially serve as the applicant for the funds, with G2G Inc. being a partner. He said that with the county acting on behalf of G2G Inc. the funding, should the trail be awarded it, would then flow through the county. Chief Administrative Officer Brenda Orchard said that technically the county would be taking on some liability, because if G2G Inc. couldn’t come up with its half of the funding, the county would be on the hook for $70,000, but that it wasn’t a serious concern for her. VanderMolen, however, clarified, saying that with Regional Tourism Organization 4 (RTO 4) providing $35,000 of funding to the trail, the county would only be fronting $35,000, which the company would then reimburse. Warden Paul Gowing said he felt it was very important for the county to continue to serve as a partner with the trail, especially after the previous week’s motion, which stated that the county re-affirmed its support of the trail going forward. He said that G2G Inc. has been working hard to provide an asset for Huron County, so council should do Downtown Brussels Santa Claus Parade Saturday, November 28 at 5:00 p.m. Our theme this year is “The Gift of Christmas” Parade forms at 4:30 pm — BMG Community Centre — 800 Sports Drive, Brussels Please bring your coloured picture to the arena after the parade.
