Weather, mood better for Christmas shopping event
Ah the snow has arrived in all its
beauty – hanging on the trees,
making sculptures on structures and
offering employment – what’s not to
like.
November is such a blah month –
the plants and the land lie dormant,
the weather patterns fly all over the
place and temperatures hit many
numbers over the month. It’s one of
those times, you peek out to see
what activity will be tolerated that
day or is it time to read.
What a difference a year makes!
As people wandered from store to
store on Thursday evening for the
annual open house, the weather was
noted – a beautiful clear, pleasant
evening when last year, it was
recalled, the streets were still a mess,
snow and slush covered the gravel
and it was cold. So the mood was
much better this year as folks came
to admire the wares of the different
shops. Now we know what’s here,
it’s time!
Frank Mills, of “Music Box
Dancer” fame put on his show at
Blyth Memorial Hall on Friday
evening. Piano music is so beautiful,
simple and clear and with Frank’s
fine fingers, all reports were an
evening well spent. Flash back:
Helen Gallop’s brother Jim and
Frank used to golf together. The last
time Frank was in Blyth, Helen had
a wee chat with him back stage.
Blyth and Brussels United
Churches are in co-operative
ministry. One of the things that
happens is when a month has five
Sundays we worship together at the
building with the 11 a.m. service.
For this Sunday, with Glenda
Morrison at the helm, we will have a
band. You’ve seen many of them
before, mostly from Brussels and
Walton, but together the music
should be great.
So get your bells and your mitts,
Santa Claus is coming to town.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Getting in the spirit
What better way to get into the spirit of giving that accompanies the Christmas season than
to find the perfect gift while supporting your community? That’s undoubtedly one of the
reasons that the basement of St. John’s Anglican Church in Brussels was packed on Saturday
for the annual Christmas Bazaar. (Denny Scott photo)

At the Branch
Decorations up in
time for Christmas
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Christmas decorations have
been put up at the Brussels Legion
Branch with thanks to Comrades
Jim Brown and Sandra Josling. The
Knight family was the first to enjoy
the decorations and have their
family Christmas there on Saturday
evening. They enjoyed a traditional
turkey dinner prepared by the ladies
of the Branch and had gifts and a
visit from Santa as well. Helping for
the Branch were Linda Bird, Jo-Ann
McDonald, Judy Lee, Mary
Bradshaw and Daisy Wong.
The Friday night supper had a
very small crowd enjoying the ham
and scalloped potato dinner. This
week will be roast beef.
The Thursday night darts had a
small group enjoying the night.
Winners were: first, Roger McHardy
and Sandra Josling and second
place, Deb Burch and Gord Jacklin.
There are plenty of spaces for more
darters to come out for an evening of
inexpensive fun. No equipment
necessary, just a sense of aim! Darts
begin at 8 p.m.
The construction has started at the
Branch for it to become accessible.
We are hoping the weather will co-
operate and it will progress rapidly.
The first fundraiser for the winter
will be a night of meat draws.
Turkeys, hams and more will be the
available prizes.
