Lighting of the Lights this Saturday in Blyth The Blyth Business Improvement Area (BIA) will be hosting a special event on Nov. 21 to mark the lighting of the village Christmas lights and kick off the holiday season. Hosted at Blyth Memorial Hall and its outdoor courtyard, the event will feature entertainment, food, drink and the official turning on of the lights and it starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday. “We’re going to be serving Scrimgeour’s sausage on a bun, pies donated by the Blyth United Church and hot chocolate,” Lighting of the Lights committee member Peter Gusso said. “There will also be a gingerbread cookie station for children inside the hall where kids will be able to make their own cookies.” The event will also feature live music. John McDowell and committee member Averly Kikkert will be performing Christmas carols which attendees will be welcome to join in. Printouts of the lyrics will be on site. Blyth’s Julie Sawchuk, who recently returned home after recovering from a cycling accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down, will be the one to press the button to ignite the lights around the village. This is the first time the event has been planned by a committee, and not the BIA as a whole. The suggestion for the committee came from Kikkert, while North Huron Councillor and BIA representative Bill Knott was the one to suggest that Kikkert be on the committee. Kikkert agreed, saying that while fundraising events are important, it is also important for the BIA to offer opportunities for both its members and their customers to celebrate the community. “That’s what I think the BIA is here for, to make fun events that draw people in from the community and beyond,” she said. “They need to be events that people can enjoy but are also affordable. Being free, this meets that criteria.” For more information contact the Blyth BIA through Facebook or its website at www.blythnow.com RICKY NELSON PAUL ANKA PAUL ANKA EVERLY BROTHERS EVERLY BROTHERS CARL PERKINS CARL PERKINS RITCHIE VALENS RITCHIE VALENS JERRY LEE LEWIS JERRY LEE LEWIS JINGLE BELL ROCK Gino Gino MonopoliMonopoliasasELVISELVIS BLYTH MEMORIAL HALL 519-523-9300www.BlythFestival.com SPECIAL MATINEE SHOWSPECIAL MATINEE SHOW !! TCC, Rathwell said, has always made an effort to maintain a charitable presence in the communities it calls home – taking part in fundraisers and donating to worthy causes throughout the area the company covers. For Brussels, Rathwell says the company contacted Huron East Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley in regards to a worthy community project and she thought the Lions Pool project was perfect. The program ran for just two weeks, so the results were encouraging for both the company and the community, Rathwell said. The pool, said Nicole Noble, chair of the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Committee, is in need of major renovations before it opens again in the spring of 2016. Necessary repairs include a new liner at a cost of $7,500 and repairs to the pipeline under the pool’s deck at a cost of $4,000. The committee has, in response, scheduled a number of fundraisers over the next few months to help with the cost, the first of which is a mom-to-mom sale, scheduled for the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Nov. 28. This event will be held in conjunction with the Brussels Santa Claus Parade, which will be held that evening at 5 p.m. Saturday, November 28 11:00 am Wingham Santa Claus Parade Wingham Lions Club will be collecting canned goods for the North Huron Food Share along the parade route. After the parade kids can meet Santa at the Firehall and get a treat bag. To enter a float or for more information Call Rick Nesbitt 519-357-3449 Pool work needed
