Vandals strike recently completed G2G trail site
Just a few weeks after work began
on the Walton “Departure Section”
of the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G)
Rail Trail, it has fallen victim to
vandalism.
Sometime over the weekend, three
of the posts placed along the trail on
the weekend of Halloween were
pulled from the ground and thrown
into adjacent fields near McDonald
Line.
Walton’s Chris Lee of G2G Inc.
says it’s unfortunate the mischief
happened, but that he was prepared
for it. He also says that, as far
vandalism goes, it could have been a
lot worse.
“It was a bit of a non-event,” Lee
said, “but nothing was destroyed and
nothing was stolen.”
This is not the first time this has
happened, Lee said, as signs had
been interfered with earlier in the
year on the stretch of trail between
Auburn and Blyth as well.
The incident has been reported to
the Huron County Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) Lee said.
While no permanent damage was
done, Lee says it’s disheartening to
see that those who are against the
trail would choose to express
themselves in this manner.
If there are those in the community
who have problems with the trail, he
said, he encourages them to attend
the G2G Working Committee open
house scheduled for Nov. 28 at the
Blyth and District Community
Centre.
“Don’t go pulling posts out. Come
to the meeting and we can have a
chat,” Lee said.
Lee said he recently attended the
Ontario Tourism Summit in Toronto
where the Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Sport began his address
to the group by talking about the
importance of trails.
He said it was inspiring to know
that while there is still some
resistance at the local level, trails are
of the highest import at the
provincial level.
He also cited a number of different
examples of trails – specifically one
in Nevada – and the concerns and
issues are strikingly similar. So Lee
feels that he and G2G Inc. are not the
first to walk this path.

NEWS
FROM WALTON
Old barns becoming a rare find locally
It was quite a week of weather last
week. We had some beautiful days,
including Remembrance Day and
then we had the miserable wet,
windy weather to adjust to and a
small amount of snow to remind us
of what’s soon coming. Just typical
weather for our area.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Marsha Nevers on her
passing. She was predeceased by her
husband Larry. She will be missed
by her three stepchildren and their
families and her special extended
family Paul and Dianne McCallum
and their family. She spent her last
days at Maplewood Manor. Our
condolences to all.
Well, that didn’t take long. The
idea for a night at the Walton Hall
and dinner was only two weeks old
and already the meal is sold out. The
show starts at 6:30 p.m. by donation
and all are welcome to attend a very
entertaining evening with Graeme
and Rick and friends!
Driving around the countryside,
doing one of my occasional extra
jobs, I noticed a few changes. Old
barns seem to be coming down on a
regular basis these days and soon,
there will few left to remember the
“good old days”. As a child, I can
remember playing in the straw mow
and grandpa warning us to stay away
from the hole in the floor, where the
straw was thrown down for the
bedding for the animals. To be
honest, I don’t remember falling
through the hole at the barn, but I did
manage to almost slip through the
hole in the barn here on our farm.
Good thing it was a small hole and a
bigger me!
The barn was taken down at the
farm of Barry and Karen Hoegy last
week to add to the growing list. I
also noticed the barn missing from
the Donna McClure farm, the
Shannon farm, small shed from the
Bachert farm and the barn from the
Scott Robinson farm. That barn has
been replaced with a nice new shed.
The Ward property on Beechwood
had all the buildings removed and a
nice new house is now there. The old
house on the Burns farm is gone and
a lovely new home is there. Just
about all the buildings and trees are
now gone from the former Hulzebos
farm. Changes, changes, changes!
Congratulations to John and Lisa
Huether and family as they have now
moved into their new home on
Walton Road. All things are not
quite done, but what a wonderful
feeling to move in.
We can officially say that we have
transformed from summer sports to
winter sports with the hockey teams
hard at play. Curling is another
winter sport just starting. The
Brussels Curling Club welcomes all
ages to come and try out the game of
curling. Curling is Monday evenings
at 7 p.m. and first-time curlers will
receive instructions. Curling brooms
are supplied and all you need are
clean shoes that have a bit of grip.
There are four people on a team and
games usually last about two hours.
There is a series of five or six games
played in a draw and there are three
draws in the curling season.
Following the games a social time is
enjoyed, sometimes with food and
sometimes not – all in a night’s fun.
Come out and try curling and the
first draw is free for new curlers!
We send get-well wishes and
continued progress in his recovery to
Orval Bauer. He is now a patient in
Seaforth Hospital. Barb Dunbar is
still a patient in Listowel Hospital
and we hope she is soon home. We
send speedy healing wishes to Lorne
Glanville who has had shoulder
surgery. We hope he comes along
quickly! We send our hopes for a
speedy recovery to Murray
McNichol as he suffered a broken
ankle. We hope he comes along well.
The Walton Hall had a busy
weekend with two rentals. On Friday
evening the hall was the venue for
the celebrating of many birthdays.
Sarah Williamson Machan and
friends Tonya Hummel and Jennifer
Storey, have turned the milestone of
the big 30 and gathered to celebrate.
They had a great time with the
unique idea of decorating the
Christmas tree with “red solo cups.”
Very nice! Happy birthday to those
born in 1985.
The Walton Hall was also the
venue of the Armstrong family
Christmas on Saturday. There were
about 40 enjoying a traditional
turkey dinner provided by the
Walton Hall Board ladies. They
dined at 1 p.m. and then had an
enjoyable afternoon visiting and
even Santa made an appearance! The
Christmas season has started!
The Cranbrook Hall also hosted a
family Christmas party on Saturday.
They had the Smith family
Christmas. They had well over 50
people come out and enjoy the
visiting and fun for the day.
Speaking of which, it is only a
little over five weeks until
Christmas. Stores are decked out in
their finest to lure the shopper into
buying great presents for all.
Brussels will host its Christmas
moonlight sales and open house on
Thursday evening. Stop by the many
businesses offering sales, goodies,
prizes and more!
The Thrift Store is moving! They
are moving to their new digs and
bargains can be picked up before
they move. The staff will appreciate
folks hanging onto their donations
for awhile until they move. There are
plenty of articles to choose from and
the less they have to move the better!
Welcome to Bridget Blake, who
has returned home to Brussels and is
working at the new TCC office in
Brussels. Drop into the office and
say hello. Bridget is the daughter of
Bruce and Michelle Blake.
An ambitious crew gathered at
Walton Hall to continue plans for a
special celebration in July 2016. The
group of Sharon Pryce, Anne Sills,
Linda Gingerich, Janet Webster and
Graeme Craig discussed more plans
for the gathering of anyone who
attended the SS No. 11 school in
Morris (the school at McGavin’s)
until 1962. The party will be held at
the Walton Hall and ball park and
let’s hope for great weather on July
16. Missing members Wenda
Humphries and Keith Wilbee will
have to catch up with their jobs.
Spread the word to family over the
holiday season when you see them
and if you want to help, call any of
the committee to volunteer!
Celebrating birthdays last week
included Danielle Ducharme,
Murray Henderson, Katie Roth,
Barry Hoegy, Tristan Rijkhoff, Pat
Gillis, Michael Grobbink, Blaine
Marks, Lynne Godkin, Anne Storey,
Charlie Glauser, Kristi Dawn
Godkin, Mark Sullivan, Brian
Warwick and Derek Hoegy. Happy
birthday to all.
