UCW raises money
Dinning ‘an example’ in policing community
Morris-Turnberry’s Lincoln
Dinning was presented with his
Police Officer of the Year Award at
the Nov. 4 meeting of Huron County
Council.
Dinning was named the county’s
top cop late last month as part of the
annual Warden’s Emergency
Services Awards that were
established several years ago. Doug
Harkes was named the Firefighter of
the Year, while Joel Paakkunainen
was named Paramedic of the Year.
Because he was out of the country
when the other two received their
awards, Dinning was honoured by
council last week.
Morris-Turnberry Deputy-Mayor
Jamie Heffer spoke to council about
Dinning, saying that Morris-
Turnberry Council had nominated
Dinning for the award, knowing him
to routinely go above and beyond the
call of duty in his work with the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Heffer said that until his
retirement earlier this year, Dinning
had truly acted as a role model for
the community, volunteering his
time for events held by various local
organizations such as the Special
Olympics, the Wingham Lions Club
and Wingham Minor Hockey, as
well as many others.
This also isn’t the first award
Dinning has won, Heffer said,
detailing a number of awards and
nominations dating back to 1995 –
some involving his time
peacekeeping in Kosovo.
Dinning has also won the Bill
Elliott Member of the Year Award,
which is handed out by the OPP
Association.
Warden Paul Gowing, also the
mayor of Morris-Turnberry, said he
was proud to nominate Dinning for
the award, saying no one was more
deserving of it than him.
Dinning thanked council for the
award, saying it was a nice
retirement gift. On the topic of
retirement, Dinning said he was
enjoying being retired and
encouraged all councillors to try it.
The Alzheimer’s Coffee Break,
hosted by the UCW was a success
and over $200 was raised to give to
the Huron County Alzheimer’s
Society.
On Thursday, Nov. 12 from 5 to 7
p.m., the stewards are hosting a roast
beef supper in the Belgrave
Community Centre. Take-out and
gluten-free are available.
Freda Johnston’s son Doug, would
like to meet some of the
congregation at the church on
Saturday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m. to
present them with a quilt containing
numberous Belgrave names. It is
thought to have been quilted in the
early 1900s.
From Nov. 30 to Dec. 4 Christmas
Bureau Collection will take place at
Sacred Heart Church in Wingham.
Let’s fill our blue tub before Nov.
30.
