Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Nov. 6 were 2,471 cattle and 428 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold on a very active trade at prices $1 to $2 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $166 to $170 with sales to $176.25. Second cut sold $164 to $166. Cows sold on a strong active trade at steady prices. On Thursday good quality and light weight beef and holstein calves sold steady to last week with both beef and holstein heavy calves trading under pressure. Light lambs sold slightly lower while heavy lambs sold steady. Sheep and goats sold steady. On Friday calves and yearlings sold on a strong active trade at fully steady prices. Andrew Black of Proton Station, consigned 23 steers that averaged 1,635 lbs. and sold for an average price of $167.52. Two simmental steers averaged 1,473 lbs. and sold to Ryding Regency for an average price of $170.50. Amsey S. Bauman of Newton, consigned 10 steers that averaged 1,656 lbs. and sold for an average price of $166.12. Five black steers averaged 1,623 lbs. and sold to Cargill Meat Solutions for $167.50. Paul M. Weber of Mount Forest, consigned 18 heifers that averaged 1,199 lbs. and sold for an average price of $170.39. Nine heifers averaged 1,141 lbs. and sold to Butch Clare Livestock for an average price of $176.25. Hutton Land and Cattle of Paisley, consigned six heifers that averaged 1,522 lbs. and sold for an average price of $172.75. Two black heifers averaged 1,473 lbs. and sold to Ryding Regency for an average price of $176. There were 314 cows on offer. Export types sold $85 to $95 with sales to $102.50; beef, $107 to $112 with sales to $125; D1 and D2, $90 to $95; D3, $83 to $90; D4, $72 to $83. Hank W. Huigenbos of Wingham, consigned one limousin cow that weighed 1,455 lbs. and sold for $123. There were 12 bulls selling $105 to $147. Brad Gilchrist of Lucknow, consigned one black bull that weighed 2,150 lbs. and sold for $147. There were 150 head of veal on offer. Beef $180 to $200 with sales to $252; good holsteins, $150 to $165 with sales to $170; medium holsteins, $135 to $150; heavy holsteins, $115 to $130. Ervin W. Shantz of Wallenstein, consigned eight calves that averaged 906 lbs. and sold for an average price of $218.87. One blue heifer weighed 875 lbs. and sold for $252. Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned five calves that averaged 815 lbs. and sold for an average price of $197.47. Two charolais heifers averaged 793 lbs. and sold for $223. Ron Harkness of Clifford, consigned one limousin steer at 695 lbs. and sold for $233. Lambs, 50 - 64 lbs. sold $218 to $260; 65 - 79 lbs., $230 to $252; 80 - 94 lbs., $200 to $210; 95 -110 lbs., $198 to $209 / lb. Sheep sold $70 to $120 / lb. Goats: kids sold $150 to $250; nannies, $50 to $120; billies, $150 to $250 / lb. Top quality stocker steers, 400 - 499 lbs. sold $317 to $343; 500 - 599 lbs., $283 to $314; 600 - 699 lbs., $259 to $289; 700 - 799 lbs., $212 to $268; 800 - 899 lbs., $240 to $257; 900 - 999 lbs., $227 to $242; 1,000 lbs. and over, $214 to $226. Top quality stocker heifers, 300 - 399 lbs. sold $333 to $350; 400 - 499 lbs., $296 to $322; 500 - 599 lbs., $266 to $287; 600 - 699 lbs., $233 to $265; 700 - 799 lbs., $227 to $245; 800 - 899 lbs., $206 to $243; 900 lbs. and over, $211 to $225. Mike Apreda of Orangeville, consigned 18 cattle. Eight steers averaged 613 lbs. and sold for an average price of $297. Dan Hoggart of Londesboro, consigned 19 cattle. Seven heifers averaged 529 lbs. and sold for an average price of $285. Six entrepreneurial farm couples from across Canada are travelling to Edmonton in November to vie for top recognition as Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers (OYF) at the organization’s annual national event, including Bluevale’s Mike and Amy Cronin. These regional honourees have been chosen from their home regions, and will present highlights of their operations at the national event. Bringing together OYF alumni and the larger agricultural industry, OYF’s event includes a special forum and concludes with a gala banquet to announce Canada’s 2015 national OYF winners. The day-long OYF event is open to the public and includes an information forum entitled “Working with the ones you love” and will be at the Marriott River Cree Resort and Casino at Enoch, Alberta on the outskirts of Edmonton. Honourees presenting for the 2015 event include: David and Sara Simmons, Little Rapid, NL; Mike and Amy Cronin, Bluevale, ON; Christian Bilodeau and Annie Sirois, St-Odilon-de-Cranbourne, QC; Mark and Cori Pawluk, Birtle, MB; Jeff and Ebony Prosko, Rose Valley, SK and Patrick and Cherylynn Bos, Ponoka, AB. Two of these regional winners will be chosen at the awards gala as Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2015. Pre-registration is required to attend the OYF event in person – forum/lunch/presentations are $75 per person, awards gala are $100 per person, and forum/lunch/ presentations/awards gala are $175 per person. Celebrating 35 years, Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ program is an annual competition to recognize farmers that exemplify excellence in their profession and promote the tremendous contribution of agriculture. Open to participants 18 to 39 years of age, making the majority of income from on-farm sources, participants are selected from seven regions across Canada, with two national winners chosen each year.
